Unofficial Characters Board Rules:

I'm just gonna say here that non-video game character suggestions will be ignored since Goku is the only non-video game character that will be included in Crusade.

The Prince Fluff (Kirby) and Tetromino (Tetris) topics have been removed by request and are now available for creating a topic for.

I feel that there should be a rule that limits the amount of character requests a member can make (atleast for a certain amount of time). Right now, new members are posting multiple character suggestions without putting much effort in their posts. Posts without much thought put into them are just as good as spam.

Agreed, but I kind of understand when most of the characters suggested are simply official Smash characters (and apparently it's ok to make topics for them).

However, we should definitely add a rule against original characters.

Rule against original characters added (I thought this would be a no-brainer.) and list updated. If I forgot to add your suggestion please let me know.

I think the rules in regards to "4th Party" and original characters should be combined into one simple rule (that also ties into getting around potential loopholes):

No characters from non-video game franchises or characters that aren't owned by video game corporations.

It prevents characters such as anime/manga characters, as they are owned by the creators of the anime/manga.
It prevents original characters, as obviously those don't come from an actual corporation.
It also prevents cases like Starkiller and Obsidius, who technically debuted in a video game, but are from franchises that are of non-video game origin (Star Wars and Godzilla).

On a potential downside (one that Giga may be opposed to) is that it would also prevent characters like Wreck-It Ralph, since while technically, he appeared in his own video game right before his movie, he's owned by Disney and his "franchise" was created for the purposes of film.

Is it good, though? Sora is a character that is owned by Disney, but I'm sure most of us would agree he's a valid character. I'm sure there's other exceptions, but I can't think of any at the moment.

I don't see the point of the "videogame corporations" clause.

The "no characters from non-videogame franchises" is good enough and enables candidates such as Ralph and Sora.

I don't think Ralph should count though. Yes, his marketing game was released to the public before the movie BUT the movie was clearly made before the game thus Ralph originated from a movie and NOT a game.

Problem with Ralph is that he'd kinda make Crusade seem a little dated. Most Disney franchises aren't touched for a long period of time, and while we know a sequel for the film is planned we don't know what's happening with it past then. Or when the second film is even going to be released.

The marketing game for Ralph is for the kids that are hyped for the movie, nothing more, but let's be smart about this. Has anyone played the game on any platform? Does it feel like a generic movie tie-in video game? I'd guess yes, hahahahaha.

I rather go with Sora since he's on the handheld now. I also change my feelings about Sora. I was watching him on the SSF2 Beta livestream. He's okay if you can do something creative like SSF2 using a move list that pops up behind him, but you choose what attack you wanna use instead of it being random like SSF2 does.

The corporations clause was intended be a means to prevent loophole abuse using logic such as "*insert character* is technically eligible because while *insert franchise* is generally non-gaming media, a video game to promote *insert franchise* came first!"
Using Disney as an example, they typically have games for their movies before the movie is released.
One (unfortunate) example I can give is Finding Nemo, a game I got alongside a brand new Gamecube for my birthday years back.
The game was released May 11 (PC) and May 12 (consoles) of 2003 while the movie was in theaters May 30.
Without the corporation clause, Nemo/Marlin/Dory would all be technically eligible.

Granted, Ralph is more of a gray area, because not only was he given a movie tie-in game before the movie came out, but the video game he comes from in-universe was de-fictionalized into an actual arcade cabinet game months before the movie released.

I played Fix-It Felix on an arcade cabinet. Honestly, it kind of sucked... it was missing a lot of elements from the movie (iirc it just scrolled upwards infinitely for each level, Ralph never got thrown off the roof).

How can we edit the clause so Sora is eligible, though? Clearly the fact that a non-video game corporation owns the character doesn't make the character ineligible.

I like that rule though. Makes good sense.

We can make only one exception, pick a few realistic video game characters that are strangely owned by non-corporate entities (my pick Sora. He's from a really good game) and put it to a vote within the team. After they pick one character, think up some movesets and so on, then they can decide to go with it or not. If they do, make him an unlockable, and keeping him secret until someone figures out how to unlock him.

If we can't have characters that originated from internet culture/memes, then why is WeeGee in the game?

Weegee was added into the game at the time when Crusade was still open to add these non-gaming additions.

After the additions of Goku and Weegee, the request for more non-gaming characters got carried away. The development team didn't want the roster to go in a direction to where it takes away the focus of actual gaming characters. This eventually lead to Goku being our only anime/cartoon character and Weegee being our only internet culture/meme character.
