| Before you read ANY of this, let me just say right now - I'll do my best not to spoil TOO much about the series, but as TVTropes will tell you it's basically impossible to discuss this game without spoiling it somehow. So if you play this game and don't want to be spoiled, I'd highly suggest skipping the plot summary and the moveset I've written. Well, anyway, I spent hours coming up with this idea, so...if you're willing to read this wall of text, I hope you like it...! (If not, which you probably aren't, there's a tl;dr at the bottom, lol) Who is Monokuma? What's Danganronpa?Monokuma is a strange teddy-bear like creature and the main antagonist of basically every significant entry of the Dangan Ronpa series, a visual novel similar to Ace Attorney in which you track down a killer to solve murder cases. Monokuma's role is that he, claiming to be the headmaster of Hope's Peak Academy, traps a group of talented students and tells them that the only way that can escape is to kill someone else. If that isn't motive enough (which it often isn't for those goody-two-shoes high-schoolers), Monokuma will ALWAYS be sure to provide one for someone, and then brutally execute them if their crime is found out by the other students during the Class Trial. However, if they can murder and get away with it (which has never happened, mind you), every OTHER student will be executed and the murderer will be set free. In the end, however, Monokuma is always defeated by the few remaining students who weren't killed. - Spoilers:
Monokuma is actually a remote-controlled animatronic bear, used as an avatar to interact with the other students by the true mastermind behind these events, Junko Enoshima. Her ultimate goal is to fill everyone in the world with despair...including herself, which turns out to be her key weakness, as she cannot resist the misery of utter failure at the end of Danganronpa, deciding to execute herself in order to feel true despair. This, however, does not stop her (and thus, Monokuma) from coming back as an artificial intelligence in both Super Danganronpa 2 and Ultra Despair Girls. Though Junko does not return in Danganronpa V3, Monokuma represents the new mastermind as usual. Monokuma actually has countless copies of himself in reserve, so even when one is destroyed, he will always come back to wreak more trigger-happy havoc. Why Monokuma? And why him over the protagonist?Monokuma is not only the visual mascot of the Dangonronpa series, but also the only character to consistently appear as a major character in every significant game of the series. Not only this, but he is also one of the most qualified characters in the series to be a fighter (if not the most qualified) due to the huge arsenal of strange tools he uses during executions and his quirky, unrealistic characteristics otherwise. Danganronpa itself is a rather popular visual novel series, which also has an anime (and a second anime in the works), a manga, several light novels, and more to its name. While more popular in Japan, localizations have made it quite popular in the west as well thanks to its engaging plot, rich lore, complex characters, and mystery elements. Critical response to the series has been overwhelmingly positive, and popularity is on the rise with the recent release of V3 (enough to get an Honest Game Trailer, which is pretty significant, no doubt). Of all the characters in the series, Monokuma is certainly the most qualified to be playable, as the protagonists change constantly between games (unlike in Ace Attorney), and the three main protagonists so far (Makoto Naegi, Hajime Hinata, and Kaede Akamatsu) don't really do much of anything and aren't nearly as significant or recognizable as Monokuma himself. He also fits perfectly alongside the likes of Phoenix Wright, being another visual novel rep with an unusual moveset - only a villain instead of a hero. Also, he's a really interesting character, no? Who wouldn't want to Smash as a sadistic teddy bear? Okay then, on to the important thing: how would he fight?Monokuma may be small, but he is one BRUTAL bear. His attacks consist of powerful, hard-hitting projectlies, strong smash attacks with huge range, and a seemingly random assortment of dangerous tools, perfect for killing and punishing murderers. Punishing is the keyword there: make one mistake, and this bear's otherwise slow and easily predictable attaks will cream you in before you can even hope to survive with their massive strength, range, and knockback. But, that's the catch - Monokuma's a little sadistic, and simply LOVES to undergo despair himself, meaning most of his attacks are laggy and just as easy to punish as you will be if you mess up. In addition, some of his attacks rely on complete randomness, so you'll have to take risks. The despair of punishment and close-calls is the name of the game - both when fighting against and playing as Monokuma. As stated though, as brutal as he is, Monokuma is just a small teddy-bear standing at 2'6'', so he's naturally light and easy to KO, making the despair he is forced to face when he fails all the more delicious. This makes him an unusual archetype - a slow grappler-type tank who is actually lightweight, but has the range to make up for it. - Moveset; Contains Game Spoilers:
Most (but not all) of Monokuma's moveset inspiration comes from his infamous executions. Attributes Walk Speed: Below average Run Speed: Below average Weight: Light Fall speed: Average Midair jumps: One Crawl?: No; he sits down when he crouches Wall cling?: No Wall jump?: No
Normals Jab: Whips forward twice with a green, spiked rope, with a crudely drawn crayon picture of the blue sky at the end. Slow, laggy move, but good range. (Execution: Kirumi Tojo) F-tilt: Swipes in front of him with a sword-wielding samurai puppet, knocking the opponent upward for follow-ups, much like Charizard's jab in PM. Poor range, but one of his fastest attacks. (Execution: Peko Pekoyama) U-tilt: Throws directly upward one of various murder weapons or tools he’s encountered – either a dumbbell, flesh-eating piranha, some untearable toilet paper, or a baseball bat (random). Dumbell has poor range but does the most damage; piranha latches on and deals continuous poison damage to the opponent; toilet paper wraps around the opponent’s neck and slows them for a short time; baseball bat has the best range. (Murders: Chihiro Fujisaki, Ryoma Hoshi, Miu Iruma, Mahiru Koizumi) D-tilt: Hammers his red execution button in front of him with his gavel. Like Villager’s d-air in Smash 4, there is a small chance that, instead of his gavel, he will use one of Robo-Justice’s four numbered hammers, the fourth having the longest range. (Murder: Kiyotaka Ishimaru/Hifumi Yamada) Dash Attack: Charges forward either on a large animal or in a bulldozer (random), knocking foes away with heavy knockback, but low damage. If an animal, Monokuma has super armor near the start of the attack, but becomes very vulnerable as the animal slows down; conversely, if he gets in a bulldozer, the attack starts slow but gets faster and gains armor at the end as the dozer’s arm starts slamming down. (Execution: Gundham Tanaka/Alter Ego)
Aerials N-air: By default, spins his gavel around him clockwise, starting from the front. Like with his d-tilt, there is a small chance the hammer will change to one of Robo-Justice’s four hammers, increasing his range significantly. (Murder: Kiyotaka Ishimaru/Hifumi Yamada) F-air: Flicks out a flurry of salt in front of him. Somewhat like Ice Climbers’ blizzard move – a multi-hitting attack that does better damage if close, but little knockback in any case. (Execution: Korekiyo Shinguji) B-air: While holding a shot put, Monokuma punches strongly behind him. Angled slightly upward; if the A button is pressed again while his fist is extended, he will drop the shot put, dealing damage to any foe below him. (Murder: Rantaro Amami) U-air: Stabs upward with any number of various murder weapons or tools he’s encountered – either a meat skewer (the handle resembling the end of a bone), a sickle, a splash of a poisoned protein shake, or a knife. Skewer is mostly weak but has a sweetspot toward the tip; sickle has short vertical range but good horizontal range; poisoned shake does no knockback but deals continuous poison damage; knife has the worst range but is the strongest. (Murders: Ultimate Imposter, Tenko Chabashira, Sakura Ogami, Sayaka Maizono) D-air: Drops a giant Tetris block directly below him; the type of block is random, and this determines the strength and knockback of the attack. Only one type of block is a meteor smash. (Execution: Chiaki Nanami & Monomi)
Smashes F-Smash: A two hit attack: Monokuma takes out a giant syringe and stabs it forward, impaling whoever it hits and preventing them from moving. The syringe then pulsates, dealing strong knockback. Great range and good power, but the second hit is not optional; if the first hit misses, Monokuma will be left wide open. (Execution: Mikan Tsumiki) U-Smash: A big pod rocket closes its doors in front of Monokuma, launches up in the air, then falls down with an explosion. Also functions as a command grab - if an opponent is standing in front of the rocket when its doors close, they will be trapped inside and damage will increase. Not a very good KO move otherwise unless the explosion hits. (Execution: Jin Kirigiri/Kaito Momota) D-Smash: A giant crusher appears in front of Monokuma and slams downward, like Bayonetta's d-smash from Smash 4, but with better range and more starting lag. Very effective meteor smash. (Execution: Kyoko Kirigiri/Makoto Naegi/Junko Enoshima)
Throws Grab: A tether grab which uses a chain with a shackle attached to the end to grab the opponent by the neck; a successful grab will result in the opponent being tied to a pole, still at a distance from Monokuma. Great range; lags badly. (Execution: Leon Kuwata/Teruteru Hanamura/Kaede Akamatsu) Pummel: Fires baseballs at his foe with a pitching machine. Slow pummel thanks to the distance, but good damage. There is a chance that the machine will either fire a small insect instead or a giant, killer mantis; if the former happens, the victim will be poisoned and slowly take damage. If it’s the latter (about a 5% chance), the pummel will deal massive damage. (Execution: Leon Kuwata/Gonta Gokuhara) F-throw: The pitching machine launches a rocket full of melted cheese at his foe, knocking them backwards. Good damage, but poor knockback.. (Execution: Teruteru Hanamura) B-throw: Monokuma sets fire to the pole the victim is attached to, then rams a fire truck into them from behind. Slow animation, but a good kill throw. (Execution: Celestia Ludenburg) U-throw: The victim is spun around at hyper-speeds in a metal cage before being thrown upwards. Another good kill throw. (Execution: Mondo Owada) D-throw: Monokuma plays a short riff on a piano, using the victim as a puppet at hyper-speed. When finished, the piano’s spiked lid closes, leaving the player on the ground and allowing for tech chases if Monokuma gets a good read. (Execution: Kaede Akamatsu)
Specials N-Spec - Hangman's Gambit: Monokuma takes out a letter surrounded in a small bubble; this letter can be any of the letters in his name (M, O, N, K, U, and A, meaning he can pull 6 letters total). Acting like an item, it travels a short distance in an arc when thrown, and gives a very weak explosion if something besides Monokuma himself comes into contact with it, doing no knockback and poor damage. It will explode on its own after some time. In addition, Monokuma and Monokuma alone can pick these back up and throw these like normal items before they detonate. However, if two of the same bubbled letters make contact with each other, they will combine and grow larger, up to a set number of times. At max power, the explosion is huge and extremely powerful; one of the strongest moves in the entire game. However, if two different letters collide with each other, both will explode weakly. No more than four or five letters can be on-screen at once. (based off the minigame seen here)
S-Spec - Truth Bullet: Monokuma fires either a blue or an orange bullet from a small rifle; if the last bullet was orange, the next will be blue, and vice versa. The projectiles are powerful, but there's a catch: if the opponent is shielding, blue bullets will not affect them at all, but orange bullets ignore shields completely. Conversely, if the opponent is not shielding, blue bullets will damage them whereas orange ones will do nothing (when the bullet fails, it is deflected with a specific sound effect, akin to an incorrect shot in Danganronpa). Blue bullets deal good knockback and damage, while orange ones have little knockback and damage, but paralyze foes briefly and have high hitstun. The word "COUNTER" should appear when orange bullets hit, and "CONSENT" when blue ones do.
U-Spec – Spare Monokuma: Monokuma's eye beeps before he spontaneously explodes, with another one taking his place from the background. The new Monokuma is vulnerable as he reappears, but the disappearing explosion is powerful. When done in the air, he stalls in the air briefly upon activation and the new Monokuma can sweetspot ledges, reappearing above the original. Puts him in special fall after midair use.
D-Spec – Don’t Break the Rules!: A unique counterattack - if anyone so much as even touches Monokuma while it is active, they will be affected by a random prohibited condition (ie: the affected player can’t run/can’t shield/can’t roll/can’t air dodge/can’t taunt/can’t press the B button, etc) for a small amount of time, likely around 10 seconds. What they can’t do is represented by a symbol above their head (ie: if you can’t run, a picture of someone sprinting would be crossed out). If they violate their randomly assigned rule in that time frame, an 8-bit sound effect will play and giant spears will appear and impale the rulebreaker, doing a set amount of damage and rendering them immobile for follow-up attacks. The timing for the counter itself is somewhat strict, however, so a failed one can leave him wide open. This move does not counter grabs. (Execution: Mukuro Ikusaba; Several characters in Danganronpa 3 Side: Future)
Final Smash – Exisal Black Monokuma gets inside a specially-designed Exisal that only he can pilot (as opposed to the Monokubs). Inside this giant combat vehicle, Monokuma can fire a multi-hitting machine gun and mow down foes merely by touching them. The machine gun does near-zero knockback, but one round of bullets deals incredibly massive damage. Gun down foes, then run over them for the KO.
Taunts 1: Monokuma laughs hysterically. 2: Monokuma becomes extremely bulky and muscular before turning back to normal right after. 3: Just like when he leaves an area in Danganronpa, Monokuma’s sprite flips around as though it were flat, with a cartoony noise playing.

With his wacky and unique personality and oddball moveset potential, he could bring something fresh and new to Crusade.

| I hate Dangan Ronpa with all my soul (I was a Something Awful member during the LP... the horror...) but this moveset seems pretty alright. Can't bring myself to support, but good on you. |

| Holy shit finally, was even thinking about making this one myself
Support lol. Somewhat just for the "I still love Dangan Ronpa" factor and cause he'd be fun as hell, also the best Vita rep
Also why him over Naegi/Hinata is not important. It's "why he should be in". What has he done for gaming? Is he wanted by fans? Etc, etc.
Anyways support, like the moveset too |

| Never heard of the series, but the info seems to be a nice (dis)harmony with Ace Attorney, and the moveset seems to be "High-risk High-Reward." Generally, I prefer the main character, but the "Poster Child" characters are still very important. I wouldn't mind him, but as mentioned above, I don't know enough about him OR the series, so I can't properly support.
Edit: If a character has a large amount of range, is it possible for them to activate the Down Special and not get hit? |

Anyways support, like the moveset too Heh, thanks for the support! To be honest, I've no idea if he's wanted by fans and I'm not sure to what extent he's had on the gaming community as a whole. Admittedly I kind of took a risk with this character, heh... - wheeled tank wrote:

All those wasted hours, paid off! As for the d-special, yeah, but only for projectile attacks. No character should have range long enough to hit him with a physical non-projectile attack from the front and not get stabbed. |

| As I've recently played through this series, I gotta give this support.
As for the moveset, it definitely feels inspired. Though I feel like it could be even *more* inspired - the up aerial is odd in that it's the only attack based on a murder rather than an execution. Surely there's more murder methods that could fit? A knife, baseball bat, poison, etc. You could even use non-murderous weapons (the bottles with the chess pieces, for example). I also feel like the final smash is less special when the 'killing blow' is also in the down smash - if you want to keep the general effect the same, why not use something like Nagito's spear? By the way, the dash attack is missing.
Again, I like the moveset, but I think it could be even better. |

| @AEM Actually, regarding DR3, there are some possibilities: The Forbidden Actions/NG codes could be applied in a throw, where Monokuma attaches a Bangle onto the grabbed opponent, only the bracelet activiates immediately, slowly damaging the opponent. - As for the Suicide Video...:
It could be a potential Final Smash, in which Monokuma attempts to grab an opponent(s) with a giant monitor, forcing them to watch the video and then fall off the stage in an attempt of suicide/simply frozen in "despair"(shock).
Aside from that, I agree with Roy in the idea that the moveset could be more "inspired". For example, you could include the murder weapons from DR1 and DR2 (the kitchen knife, dumbbell, or Justice Hammer for example) or clues used in the mysteries (i.e. The Monokuma Bottles, glowing knife in DR2: Case 1) or even misc items, such as the Hacking Gun. Most of these attacks could be used in attacks, though they could possibly be in a throw as well. |
