DEBUT: Yoshi's Island (1995)
LATEST APPEARANCE: Yoshi's Woolly World (2015)
(This is a seperate thread from the Poochy thread due to radical changes. Opinion's on the old Poochy, as such, will most likely be affected in various ways, and will no longer be relevant.)
These two adorable critters are recurring characters of the Yoshi series. Poochy is Yoshi's little dog sidekick who helps him get around, and is one of the most major and recurring characters of the series. You may remember the Ukiki from that dang Super Mario 64 mission where you had to rescue your cap from one, but they're actually recurring enemies of the Yoshi series and are prominent in them and cameo in Mario spin-offs as well.
These two are paired together because they actually appeared in Tetris Attack. They were both playable characters in the same slot, but Poochy made the sound effects.
Before I begin anything more, here's a write-up of their individual histories that's more in-depth then our beginning paragraph.
POOCHYYoshi's canine pal who appears in all but two games in the entire Yoshi series. He also has a very prominent role in Yoshi's Woolly World, appearing in multiple promotional materials and the loading screen as well as the cover.
Yoshi stands on Poochy to traverse multiple levels in the many games Poochy is featured in. He seems to be invincible to lava and such, so he's very helpful.
Poochy is arguably one of the most recurring Yoshi characters; he's appeared in every single mainline Yoshi game (this is excluding games such as Tap & Go) and a core Yoshi character at that; he's never appeared in a Mario game, he's all Yoshi!
Let's recap; recurring and major, relevant, core Yoshi character...what's not to love?
UKIKIThis little monkey has appeared frequently in the Yoshi series and cameos in spin-offs like Mario Party as well. They're a bit cowardly and tend to flee whenever Yoshi comes around, if they don't pelt him with things like seeds!
Ukiki's are mischievous and actually act as enemies. However, a Ukiki and Poochy seemed to have become buddies in Tetris Attack, so this particular Ukiki is the Ukiki we see here.
Ukiki's are less seen compared to many other enemies, but they deserve a spotlight as well. While not a completely core Yoshi character, they're pretty close!
There’s their histories! Now here comes the long list of arguments....
I Don't Even Know This Ukiki Dude.Just because you don't know them doesn't mean they're any less important. Ukiki's are lesser known, yes, but so is Ristar and Mach Rider. People not knowing Ukiki shouldn't be a factor.
Poochy Is Still Ridiculous! Here's who I think the top 3 reps for Yoshi could be.
Baby Bro's. Kamek. Poochy.
Baby Bro's: Could be considered just as much a Mario rep as a Yoshi rep.
Kamek: Great idea for a Yoshi rep. Broom's a bit of a problem.
Poochy: Nothing in the way of him except these two. And really, there's nothing wrong with 2 Yoshi reps; we don't have a limited amount of space roster-wise.
Poochy is one of the most reappearing characters in Yoshi. He's relevant, prominent, well-known...give it some thought, he's not as ridiculous as he seems.
Such An Odd Duo!And the ONLY duo. Poochy & Ukiki bring something REALLY unique; they're like Duck Hunt, something that Crusade has nothing close to. They also make sense, as they've appeared together before.
I hope that's all. Now, onto the moveset!
Poochy and Ukiki's MovesetAlongside being a duo, these two are unique in that, because they're very innocent, a lot of their moveset consists of them trying to catch a pesky egg (to hug!). As such, many of their attacks are accidents.
Also, Ukiki is on Poochy's back, and is standing up for most attacks.
Poochy and Ukiki's NeutralsNeutral: Ukiki hops onto Poochy's head and swipes his paw forward.
Jab: Ukiki swipes his paw forward, twice and Poochy jumps to face backwards and kicks up the ground. Think a slower version of Pikachu's jab.
Side Tilt: Ukiki stretches out his arms and wiggles them up and down, as Poochy sticks out his tounge and licks furiously, which deals damage
Up Tilt: Ukiki gets out the egg and throws it upward.
Down Tilt: Poochy crouches and swings his paw out, and Ukiki crawls off his head and swings a paw out as well.
Poochy and Ukiki's SpecialsNeutral Special: Ukiki gets out a watermelon and chows down on it. The more he eats of it, the stronger he chews, and when you release the button, Ukiki fires watermelon seeds from his mouth. The more it's charged, the more he spits out.
Side Special: The egg appears, and starts rolling away. Poochy power walks towards it, in a clumsy attempt to catch it. He has super-armor during this, but can be damaged. However, any opponent that he bumps into receives damage. At the end of the move he finally catches the egg, and hugs it, causing a very small span of endlag.
Up Special: The Stork flies in and Poochy and Ukiki hop into a little bag the Stork holds. You can tap the button constantly to make the Stork fly faster and higher. At the end of the move, the Stork drops the duo, and they can control their fall. Any opponents that come very close have a chance to be kicked by a flailing Poochy.
Down Special: Poochy digs into the ground and finds a random Yoshi related item that can be eaten, thrown, etc. It could be an egg, some fruit, you name it!
Poochy and Ukiki's GrabsGrab: Poochy and Ukiki both reach out with their little paws.
Pummel: Ukiki comically slaps the opponent in the face.
Forward Throw: Poochy trips the opponent, who lands on the egg, which sends them flying forward.
Back Throw: Same thing, but Poochy grabs the opponent and turns around before tripping them.
Up Throw: Ukiki grabs the opponent, shakes them, then throws them straight upwards.
Down Throw: Poochy gently puts the opponent down and Ukiki gets out a bomb and places it on them, and it explodes into confetti.
Poochy and Ukiki's AerialsNeutral Aerial: Poochy reaches out for the egg, that's spinning right infront of the duo. The egg and Poochy's paws damage opponents.
Side Aerial: Ukiki spits out a large watermelon seed.
Up Aerial: Ukiki does a handstand and kicks out upward.
Down Aerial: Poochy holds Ukiki as they jump off of Poochy and kick downward multiple times.
