Many years ago, long before anyone can remember, Crusadia’s foundations were laid down by three brothers. While their true names have been lost to time, they are known today as The Phantom, The Falcon, and The Doctor. They ruled over Crusadia, bringing peace to the land with their powers and good intentions. Everything seemed well, and many prospered under their leadership.
However, as the years passed, the middle brother, The Phantom, began to realize that he could not rule forever. He loved Crusadia and its people, and did not want to leave it behind. In his old age, he began to seek out ways to extend his life beyond its natural capacity. He delved in dark magic, something outlawed and forbidden ever since Crusadia’s conception. In order to hide his forbidden practices, The Phantom shut himself into the Crusadia castle, locking himself deep within the catacombs of the city.
After years passed, the eldest brother, The Falcon, decided that he would go and search for his younger sibling. Despite Falcon’s old age, he was still heralded as the bravest and most skilled of the three brothers. After days of searching, Falcon came across a hunched, shadowy figure, muttering over a spell book. It was Phantom. The dark magic had warped him from the good-intentioned man he once was into an unspeakably disfigured and insane individual. Falcon tried calling out to Phantom, but Phantom did not call back. As Falcon inched closer to his brother, a sense of dread hung over him; but he dismissed it. Surely, this weird and disfigured man was still his brother. Finally, standing valiantly over the shadowy mess, Falcon again called out to his brother.
This time, Phantom did respond, but not with words. In the blink of an eye, Phantom lunged towards Falcon, stabbing him with a poison covered spear; Falcon dropped to the floor. Phantom knew his time had come to rule over the kingdom. In his last few breaths, Falcon muttered to Phantom: “If you continue down this path, everything you once cherished will fall…”
Crusadia fell into darkness. The Doctor had fled, ashamed that he had done nothing to prevent this outcome. Crime filled the streets, and the once prosperous land was now in chaos. Under Phantom’s rule, Crusadia was doomed to fail.
There was, however, a glimmer of hope. A small group of rebels, who loved Crusadia as it once was, rose against Phantom. Led by a man named Detta, the rebels struggled against Phantom’s forces. Eventually, Phantom was driven out of the great city. Sure of their victory, the rebels began to rebuild. Detta assumed the title of King, and ruled the land for some time. What Detta did not foresee, was that Phantom was destined to return.
One day, a dark shadow covered the sun. The Phantom had returned. Phantom laid siege to the city, destroying the progress the rebels had made. As soldiers and civilians alike perished, it seemed all was lost.
However, determined to not let Crusadia die, Detta decided he needed to take drastic measures. As Phantom barged into the throne room, Detta prepared a magical spell.
“Isn’t this a familiar sight?” Phantom said in an arrogant tone, slowly walking towards Detta. “You kicked me out of my rightful home… and now it’s time to take it back!”
Detta said nothing in response. Phantom continued towards him. “Scared, are you? I’m not surprised. I’m stronger than you could ever imagine.” Detta was shaking; if he failed now, everything he cared about would be destroyed.
Phantom was now directly in front of Detta; Detta could smell the mildew on Phantom's breath. “I am a bit disappointed, though. I expected a fight; it would have made what I am about to do all the more satisfying.” The Phantom extended his arm upwards, revealing a bony, dark gray hand with sinister claws, preparing to rip out Detta’s heart. As The Phantom swooped in for the kill, Detta grabbed The Phantom’s hand.
“You’re wrong. This is not your home anymore. You killed anything that remained of what you once had. In wanting to save Crusadia, you turned against it and everything it stood for.” Detta struggled to keep his grip on The Phantom. “But I have loved Crusadia ever since I came here, and I’ll be damned to let you kill it again.” Detta’s spell was complete.
“Wh-what are you doing?! You’ll kill us both!” The Phantom screamed in realization.
“It’s for the best.” A flash of light then exploded from the throne room that could be seen throughout all of Crusadia. Where Detta and The Phantom once stood, lay a pile of ten glowing stones. These stones were a culmination of the two men’s souls; with five belonging to Detta, and five belonging to The Phantom. While it had successfully disarmed The Phantom, Detta had to sacrifice himself in order to cast the spell.
Crusadia was once again at peace. A man that was called the Smash King rose to power, and assigned himself a team of royal guards. Not only would these guards protect and patrol the city of Crusadia, but they would also carry a stone left from the fateful day when the Phantom was defeated. As time went on, many forgot the significance of the stones, and saw them instead as a prize that was acquired when someone was chosen to be part of the royal guard. It seemed that only Smash King knew of their significance, any why they needed to be protected at any cost by the guard.
You see, Detta’s spell split the two men’s souls into ten different stones of energy. When compiled together, if one knew the correct ingredients and magic words, they could bring into the world a being of untold power - one that would need to obey whomever summoned it. It was for this reason that Smash King felt that it was best if only he knew about the stones’ true origin and power, and why they needed to stay in the hands of the royal guard: ten individuals he trusted with his life and the safety of Crusadia.
