Elma is the main protagonist of Xenoblade Chronicles X.
She is a BLADE (abbreviated name for "Beyond the Logos Artificial Destiny Emancipator", a private military organization) captain from an unknown planet. Elma is naturally calm, cool, and collected. She wields two types of weapons: Dual Swords for close combats and Dual Guns for long-range combats. Even when she is quick and nimble, Elma consistently has high precision while in combat. Her general duty is to retrieve survivors and DNA samples from cryogenic stasis pods scattered across planet Mira. She has a deep fascination with cats.
Elma is a main playable character who appeared in Xenoblade Chronicles X for the Nintendo Wii U, the spiritual sequel to the widely acclaimed Nintendo Wii game, Xenoblade Chronicles. At age 29, she has been marooned along with others on planet Mira after two warring aliens factions destroyed Earth. Elma and several other characters basically help humanity to get back on their feet and rebuild their lives on an alien planet while fighting off both native and nonnative enemies but her reasons for doing so is unknown.

The full extent of her combat abilities is unclear however what is known is she wields two types of weapons: the Dual Swords which are designed for close-range combats and Dual Guns for long-range combats. Her designated Skell, a mecha robot, is named Wels which can be seen below.

Elma can be a highly technical fighter that rewards players who know how to handle the character well. Due to the technical nature of Xenoblade Chronicles X, Elma appears to carry that over to Smash. On the outside, she hits fairly hard and has quick attack speed. Her jump is slightly below average and her walking and dashing speed is fairly slow. Her walking speed is one of the slowest in the game actually. However, beneath that, she has a number of mechanical gimmicks to her character that drastically changes how she is played:
Dual Swords/Dual Guns: Elma wields both Dual Blades and Dual Guns but she can only utilize them one at time requiring her to switch them out using the Neutral Special, Fullmetal Jaguar. Both have their own unique move sets and attributes. Dual Blades deal more damage and have higher attack speed but reduced range as well are rather laggy. Dual Guns have amazing range and quick to start up but deal less damage and knockback.
Deterioration Mechanic: As she uses one of the dual weapons over time, it will deteriorate causing less damage and slowing down her speed. Switching it out for the other dual weapon begins to heal the weapon and sets Elma's damage and attack speed back to normal. If she tries to switch before the deterioration percentage hits 50%, there will be significant lag added to the start up and ending animations. You can tell the weapons are at 50% by the sudden decrease in damage and knockback output as well as how her attack speed slows down.
Stat Boosts: Much like Shulk, Elma is able to boost her own stats through two different attacks: Datapod and Soul Voice or "Battle Cry" in the English version. Datapod can be used to gather data on a nearby fighter and use it to momentarily improve Elma's stats in a way that gives her an upper hand against her opponent. The special move does have it's glaring weaknesses though. Battle Cry summons an encouraging word from one of her Xenoblade Chronicles X teammates. The Battle Cry will moderately boost only one of her stats or attributes.
Captain Mechanic: Elma sees herself as a natural born leader and has significant experience on the battlefield and forming strategies. Therefore, within team battles; she has a very slight increase in damage output and movement speed that increases based on how many are on her team. However, if a team member dies, she decreases in stats. If a team member gets a kill, she increases slightly in stats.

Standard Attacks:

== Moveset ==

Special Set A:

Special Set B:

Final Smash:

Elma fluffs out her hair and looks back behind her.
Points her right sword/arm at the opponent and says "You will be defeated."
Elma strikes a pose where her hand is held slightly in front of her face and she makes a fist. She then says "For NLA!"
Elma does a stretch by bending down and stretching out her leg. [/spoiler]

On Screen Appearance:
Steps out from a Lifepod.
Flies into the stage from a Skell and jumps out and poses.
Arrives from an elevator that rises from the floor and steps out.

Victory Animations:
Elma performs several slashes with her Dual Swords and says "We will fight for our future!"
Points her Dual Guns to the right and to the left and says "All squads, move out!".
Elma brushes some dust off from her outfit and says "That wasn't too hard."
Cross or Lin appears next to her and Elma says "Cross/Lin, did you get enough battle data?" Cross/Lin says "Yes, ma'am!"
Elma does a thumbs up and turns around and begins to walk away off into the distance.

Losing Animation:
Elma is clapping with a slight smile.
Elma holds her hand over her head and appears dizzy.
Elma breathing heavily with one eye closed and leaning slightly forward.

Victory Fanfare
A  flourished remix of 1:13 to 1:25 from the song "CODENAMEZ".
(To be completed)

I feel like we would need Shulk before we have Elma

I mean Shulk is already fifty times more well known than Elma

So yeah, no thanks (For now)

So her playstyle is basically this. She has the attribute switches like Shulk, weapon limitation like Robin, and dual weapon attacks like Pit, all balled up into one.

I would be supportive of a Xenoblade Chronicles X character after we get Shulk though if we do. Though, I thought the Xenoblade Chronicles X Avatar was technically the main character.

I thought so too. Also, isn't it a bit too early to think about a Xenoblade Chronicles X character?
I mean, that game isn't even released yet.

Well it is, in Japan.

It seems that Elma is the actual main protagonist while the Avatar character "Cross" is just a member of the party / the player's viewpoint of what's going on.

She looks like KOS-MOS. I wonder if she's capable of pulling the same feats as her. It would be interesting to see her pulling off a X-Buster as part of her moveset.
