Darkrai (Pokemon) Discussion: The walking nightmare approaches OtQXmTV

Darkrai is a Mythical Dark-type (the only mythical with this type) from the 4th generation of Pokemon games. As the "nightmare" pokemon as proven by a quick google search, Darkrai is known for putting foes to sleep and keeping the pressure up with strong special attacks

This mythical pokemon has the ability to outspeed other pokemon with its high speed and can easily put pokemon to sleep with Hypnosis or Dark Void (A Darkrai exclusive). But due to its average defense and poor health it can be dealt with by a good player.

Darkrai has some good things going for it that would make its inclusion make sense. First off is type diversity since no other pokemon thats playable is a dark type (minus Greninja, who isn't in crusade but is in SM4SH). Second is the fact that it would be the only Mythical pokemon thats playable. Third is that the only other pokemon that was in gen 4 is Lucario, so adding Darkrai keeps the gens ingame relatively fresh (instead of only adding to gen 1 pokemon). Last but not least is its popularity, with Darkrai getting 14 in a Japanese poll for most popular pokemon beating more than 700 other pokemon for its spot

TRAITS

As a levitating pokemon, Darkrai would have low weight and low gravity
Darkrai would also have great aerial mobility
Most of its attacks would be weak/average in knockback and damage
[Void] Moves with this trait will create "portals" either above, below, or to the side of Darkrai. Once these portals are placed, Darkrai can use them to attack in one of the following ways

  • (Jab 2, Up and Down smash):Darkrai would summon a fist made of shadows to punch in the direction the Void is facing
  • (Grab): Darkrai would summon a shadow hand to grab in the direction the void is facing (stunning the target)
  • (Neutral Special):Darkrai sends a Dark pulse out of the Void
  • (Forward Smash): Darkrai sends dark pellets into the voids.

It should be noted that walking into all but the grounded Voids will transport that player to another void (grounded ones put the opponent to sleep instead). The portal the player exits from is random. Also, the voids cannot be destroyed by damage but disappear after they are used (if used for teleporting, both the entry and exit void disappear). And only 4 can be active at a time

[Bad dreams] If Darkrai attacks a sleeping enemy, the attack will inflict a poison-like state upon the victim and force them to take 1/2 of the damage they would get from Nightmare

SPECIALS

Neutral {Dark Pulse}:Darkrai launches a multi-hit beam forward. It can be charged to do more damage and have more range

Side {Hypnosis}:Darkrai puts people in the attack's range to sleep

Up {Dark Void}:Darkrai uses a Dark void (not the same as the voids from the Void trait)
to teleport. While Darkrai doesn't get as much distance as other teleporting moves, Darkrai doesn't enter a helpless state after using it

Down {Dream Eater/Nightmare}:If a opponent is asleep. Then using this will deal damage and give Darkrai half of the damage as health. If the input is smashed however, the user will cause the target to enter a "poisoned" like state

Final Smash {Eternal Eclipse}:Works in the same way as the Burst attack from Pokken Tournament with the same name (as an added effect, this Final smash pierces super armor).
Eternal Eclipse:

NORMALS

Jab:Slashes forward creating a void(1) then sends a punch forward (2) [Void]
F-tilt: Darkrai slashed downward from above its head level
U-tilt: Darkrai spawns a small ball of dark energy upwards. If it is interrupted, it will turn into a void, but if something stops it (ex. a player getting hit or attacking it) it will instead explode [Void]
D-tilt: Fires a single pellet from its F-smash to the ground
F-Smash: Darkrai sends multiple dark pellets into a void on the ground (The void isn't a part of the void trait, but the attack activates a void attack)
D-Smash: Darkrai releases a dark mist around itself near the ground
U-Smash: Darkrai creates two voids above its head before summoning two shadow fists to punch into each other
Dash {Quick attack}: Darkrai dashes forward. Has high priority for a move of its caliber

AERIALS

N-air: Darkrai exerts a dark energy field around it
F-air {Shadow Claw}: Darkrai slashes forward. Has a 1 in 6 chance of gaining bonus launch power. Smashing the input will make Darkrai shread through space creating a dark void as well as dealing damage (halfs the damage from the non-smashed version) [Void]
B-air: Darkrai fires a short-ranged dark pulse
U-air: Darkrai fires a weak Dark Pulse from one hand upwards
D-air: Darkrai slashes downwards creating a void [Void up]. The void wont be created if Darkrai is too close to the ground when the move is used

GRAB

Grab:Attempts to grab the target with both hands. average lag
Pummel: Darkrai's eye shines as it psychicly sends nightmares to the the opponent. slow pummel
F-throw {Snarl}:Dakrai uses Snarl before slashing the opponent away (this reduces the power of the target's attack for 3 seconds). Slow throw
B-throw {Disable}:Darkrai turns around with the opponent in tow and then uses disable which stuns them for a brief moment (Darkrai can disable other foes who move inside the throw's hitbox). average throw speed
U-throw: Makes a void (not a part of the Void trait) and has a shadow fist punch the opponent up. fast throw speed
D-throw: Darkrai drags the opponent into a void (not a part of the Void trait) before doing a unseeable attack and then throws them out of the void. average throw speed

Support I guess? Darkrai is pretty cool. My only gripe is that we already have Lucario for Gen 4.
