Donbe And Hikari (Shin Onigashima) Discussion: Demon-Fighting Duo!

Another character idea.

This time, I'm coming with the siblings which had to face an island full of demons: Donbe and Hikari!

-Data:
The main characters in the video-game version of a classic Japanese folk tale. The game chronicles the lives of our fearless heroes from their births to the time they drove the evil from the Island of Ogres. They are accompanied in their adventure by Ringo the dog, Matsunosuke the monkey, and Ohana the pheasant.

-Appearences:
-Shin Onigashima (Famicom (Japan-only); 1987)
-Kirby Dream Land 3 (SNES; 1997; Cameo-only)
-Super Smash Bros. Melee (GCN; 2001; Trophy)
-Captain Rainbow (Wii (Japan-only); 2008)


-Why I support them?
Well, among all the characters Nintendo created in their history, I think adding also some Japan-only characters could be a good idea. We seen it with Ayumi Tachibana (Famicom Detective Club), Takamaru (Nazo No Murasamejo), Lip (Panel De Pon), Prince Sabure (Kaeru No Tame Ni Kane Wa Naru); and, now, I'm adding these characters.



-Moveset:

-General Fact: They fight in pair like Ice Climbers; however, the major part of their moves is different from each one.

-Normal Moves:
-Normal Combo:
(Both): Slashes twice and then spins weapon (Donbe uses a wood stick; Hikari uses a fan)
-Side Normal:
(Hikari): Curves a fan and throws it like a boomerang.
(Donbe): Punches
-Up Normal:
(Hikari): Spins her fan upwards like a helicopter blade
(Donbe): Delivers an uppercut
-Down Normal:
(Both): Perform a downward diagonal kick

-Dash Attack:
(Hikari): Sticks out her palms and releases a little pulse of energy 3 times twice
(Donbe): Jumps and delivers a flying kick

-Aerial Attacks:
-Neutral Aerial:
(Hikari): Spins around with a stick held outward
(Donbe): Delivers a spinning side kick
-Front Aerial:
(Hikari): Extends both hands forward, releasing a little pulse of energy
(Donbe): Brings a woodstick outward and leaves it out to further damage opponents
-Up Aerial:
(Hikari): Spins her fan upwards like a helicopter blade
(Donbe): Spins in the air with outstetched arms
-Back Aerial:
(Hikari): Puts both of her feet behind her, making a viable move for edgeguarding
(Donbe): Does a backwards horizontal slash with a woodstick
-Down Aerial:
(Both): Spin around

-Grabs:
(Hikari): Catches her opponent with a tether grabbing vine
(Donbe): Grabs them normally
-Pummel:
(Hikari): Slaps the enemy
(Donbe): Slashes enemy with a woodstick
-Forward Throw:
(Both): Does a long lunge forward pushing opponent and then slashes at the end
-Up Throw:
(Both): Slashes upwards launching opponent (Hikari uses a fan; Donbe uses a woodstick)
-Back Throw:
(Hikari): Throws her opponent overhead
(Donbe): Performs a backdrop
-Down Throw:
(Both): Ringo the dog comes, and bites the enemy 3 times

-Smash Attacks:
-Side Smash:
(Hikari): Jumps up and slams her fan down
(Donbe): Jumps and performs a dropkick
-Up Smash:
(Hikari): Does a quick jump with an upwards kick with both of her feet, curving backwards near the end
(Donbe): Does a quick jump with an upwards kick with a stick, curving backwards near the end
-Donw Smash:
(Hikari): Plays a melody, summoning a little tornado
(Donbe): Punches in the ground. If sucsessfully done, it will bury an opponent and then uproot them high into the air; but may also be a fail and leave them open.

Special Attacks:
-Neutral Special:
(Hikari): Ice Ashes: Hikari uses a bag, and blows some ashes, freezing her opponents. However, if you held the button after tossing the bag, she'll launch a giant icy wind sphere. She recovers later 25% of health.
(Donbe): Sulfur Ball: Donbe throws a ball into the air which rises and falls in a heavy arc, doing large knockback in midair, but it doesn't go far. When it lands, it creates a smoke cloud which increases the damage of anybody near the cloud.

-Side Special:
(Hikari): Mirror Beam: Hikari uses a mirror, which generates a beam which reflects enemy projectiles. If it's performed near an opponent, the beam hits opponents, but can't reflect anything. However, if the button is pressed, it'll transform in a forward-travelling beam which damages opponents, but loses its reflecting properties.
(Donbe): Ringo/Matsunosuke: Donbe calls his friend Dingo the dog, and rides it. If you press the Special Button, Donbe will jump from Ringo, who'll launch to pounce the enemy (similar to Duck Hunt Dog's Down Special). However, if Donbe performs the move in midair, Matsunosuke the monkey will come in its place, jumping alongside Donbe, and delivering a dropkick while flying. The move also helps Hikari (if she's near Donbe at the moment of using the move).

-Up Special:
(Hikari): Water Bracellet: Hikari uses a bracellet which summons a whirlpool to pick herself (and Donbe (if he's near)), which can be controlled in any direction, but it has less vertical movement than horizontal movement. If any opponent is caught at the whirlpool, he/she will be trapped in a bubble, until the attack ends.
(Donbe): Ohana Fly: Donbe calls his friend Ohana the pheasant, and rides it for flying. The bird performs a fast dive depending the pressed direction. If any opponent is caught during the movement, Ohana performs a diving head-bomb, while Donbe jumps from the bird. The move can also help Hikari  (if she's near Donbe at the moment of using the move).

-Down Special:
(Both): Passing The Torch: This move allows you changing between Donbe and Hikari; after using it, the move turns the other one in the lead of the duo (Hikari is the lead one by default). However, if one of them dies, you can't perform this move. However, this move changes depending the one who remains in battle. This move doesn't appear in Alternate Playstyles Battles, due to you can play as Donbe or Hikari by stand-alone.
(Hikari): Curing Orb: Hikari starts to meditate and summons an orb with the kanjis 健康 (kenko=health), which protects her, recovering 25% of damage. If she's playing in Team Battle, she can use this move on an ally, curing him/her.
(Donbe): Mallet Of Light: Donbe uses a powerful hammer, hitting eneimes and bury them. If you make it again, while the enemy is buried, the opponent is sent to fly.



-Final Smash: Fantasy Heaven. Hikari plays a melody, making raining in the stage. In this moment, Donbe transforms in Shin Donbe, who gets more power, and starts to attack his enemies (you can control him in this state if he's the leading one of the duo), meanwhile Hikari summons quakes (which bury enemies), and barrage of thunderbolts and light beams which come flying in all directions becoming less dense the further away from Donbe & Hikari they get. The attack finishes with three bigger aura beams falling from the sky, impacting at the stage, creating a huge explosion which sents opponents fly away! The rain vanishes as the beams disappear, Donbe returns to its normal state, and Hikari lands back on the ground.


-Entrance To The Stage: Donbe and Hikari arrive to the stage on a boat. Both jump from the boat.

-Taunt:
(Hikari): Waves her hand from side to side with a smile on her face
(Donbe): Jumps high and rising his arms in midair.

-Victory Theme: Intermission Theme from Shin Onigashima

Actually, Donbe and Hikari are very requested in Japan even to this day.
America and Europe? Not so much, but then again, Melee had Fire Emblem.

Wow, 1 game only in Japan and some cameos, plus no real proof n=Nintendo actually care about them. Just because they're Japan only really isn't a good enough reason

Donbe and Hikari (as well as my personal Famicom favorite Ayumi Tachibana) are Mystery Mushroom costumes in Super Mario Maker, and thus finally have their overseas debut...and yet there is STILL no Ice Climber costume! Something to think about.

Support. I've been on a number of Japanese forums and they love the idea of these two as Smash characters, they're on virtually everyone's list. Putting them in Crusade might even get us some overseas players.

Yes, let's add some random old Japanese only characters that Nintendo barely acnolage and was a trophey in Melee, yes I see nothing wrong with that. Honestly, the only Japanese retro characters Crusades need is Takamaru and Lip, because Nintendo know they actually exist.

Nintendo remember Donbe & Hikari. Hikari was in Captain Rainbow, and they were both in Super Mario Maker.

Not saying they're a good choice, but everyone is making them seem way worse than they are.

When compared to other Jap only characters, they are really low still.

Could you give some examples? I understand Takamaru (Almost was in Sm4sh) and Lip (Decent amount of games). Besides a couple others, (Prince Sable comes to mind) I can't think of many that are better.

Well, that's basically it. There's also the detective girl, but I see nothing you can use for her to fight, and maybe that Devil World dinosaur.

Ayumi Tachibana and Tamagon is who you are thinking of.

I guess one Japan-exclusive character would be all you "need." My vote would be for Takamaru cause we don't have a samurai yet.

And Lip, as Panel De Pon has had western releases, but just changed because at the time little girls wasn't something the west liked.

If there had to be one I'd want Lip just for puzzle game rep, but it's difficult to overstate how popular these two are in Japanese Smash speculation. They're at least as popular as Ridley was here during Brawl speculation, if you don't have them on your list there you need specific justification (usually some combination of "they weren't in an action game", "they haven't had a starring role since the Super Famicom", and "they've never appeared in the West")

I'd say add Donbe and Hikari, but in the same update as whats-his-name from StarTropics.

As much as I support this, Shin Onigashima really only needs one slot on the roster. Putting them in separately would be overkill, I think.

Agreed. And you cannot have Donbe without Hikari or Hikari without Donbe. You just can't.

Slots......

Every franchise only "needs" one "slot". Despite that, from playing both games myself, their styles tend to be better separate anyway. You can't really have one without the other. I strongly doubt it'll be "overkill" since it's they are the only two that matter.

No, I think it had a sequel, and the original was remade for Super Famicom. The fact remains that two characters' worth of balancing and coding is more than Shin Onigashima really deserves, at least in a Western-made fangame. Maybe if Crusade really takes off in Japan we can split em into two characters, but...

Wow, that's some obscure characters right there.

For the record, if we DO have to cut it to one character Donbe seems to be the more popular choice in Japan.

I was actually confused: the game was in two discs, released a few months apart and then packaged together from then on out. It was also ported to the GBA as part of the NES/Famicom Mini series. There was also a Super Famicom gaiden/side story game called Heisei Shin Onigashima that was released over Satellaview and later ported to cartridge, which focuses on the animal helpers from the original game, and came packaged with a remake of the original. A port of the original was also available on the remake cartridge, with undefined changes to text (adding more kanji, I would assume) and changes to the music because of the different soundchip.

Like I said, I played the games. Both main games (on GBA) and the side story game (used an emulator). The latter was pretty boring.

And yes, it was on the Wii Virtual Console in Japan.

Shin Onigashima is up there with Moon Remix RPG Adventure on the games I'm using as benchmarks for my learning Japanese. It seems really fascinating, but I'm just not fluent enough to play a point-and-click through the language barrier.

We should really stop using words like "need" and "deserve" when vouching for characters unless they've had an impact on gaming or Smash Bros. as a whole.

Those words shouldn't be used in the first place. It simply resorts to people making up rules for what should be in a game they aren't even making and if it's not to their liking, it instantly sucks. Unlike this game, the official series could possibly get away with it.

I'm not entirely sure if there are literal "slots" in this game, which is why I suggested them to be separate. Especially with those movesets.
