Protoman (Mega Man) Discussion: Proto Fighting Robot! Empty
PostSubject: Protoman (Mega Man) Discussion: Proto Fighting Robot!   Protoman (Mega Man) Discussion: Proto Fighting Robot! EmptyMon Dec 01, 2014 6:53 am

WARNING: Mega man will have many names in this post for entertainment values only. Please don't get confuzzled. Also, whenever a move is mentioned twice, it's because the Proto Buster is not guaranteed to become Protoman's Neutral B or his Neutral A, thus the moves are shuffled around a little. Finally, for those who don't know, Smash Bros 3DS/Wii U=SSB4=Sm4sh.

All right. So, I've heard a bunch of whispers and such about adding Protoman to Crusade, but most people think he'd just be a clone of Ultra Guy or whatever he's called these days. And while this could be true, my research shows that he would have some clear differences from the Cyan Demolisher. But first, why do people want Protoman in this game? Well first of all, he is one of the most famous characters in the Meg Ma games, with the exeption of Roll and D.r Light. And while Roll COULD be added because broomy-broomy sweepy-sweepy, I really do doubt this. Protoman is just too good to pass up, but what differences does he have from the Cerulean Coward?

The first mayor difference is that PM (Protoman) has a large shield. This shield can block (And maybe even reflect?) projectiles, which could work like Link's Shield in SSB4, and in MM9 and 10 it is raised whenever he jumps, which means this move could be used for his forward or neutral air, also decreasing damage and knockback during this move's use. Other differences are that PM shoots at a slightly lower angle than Super boy, which could also be added to his moveset to hit ducking characters. Finally, he takes more damage and is lighter than Rockmega, making him a frail and risky character. Let's look at the full moveset I have in mind.

Strandard attacks.
A jab: If Omega Kid's jab is changed to the Mega Buster in the next update, PM's strandard A should be the Proto Buster, a slightly more powerful version of the Mega Buster. If not...How about just a slightly more Powerful version of the Indigo Destroyer's Crusade Jab? Simple as that! Maybe the Shield could be used as a finisher, but...I dunno. Also, the Proto Buster's shots are, like I mentioned earlier, angled slightly lower, enabling it to hit all crouching targets and perhaps even people hanging on ledges.

Up tilt: PM holds his shield above him, blocking all attacks. Slight cooldown, no damage.
Down tilt: Slide. Mega man. SSB4. Slightly more powerful.
Side tilt: Protobuster (See Strandard A) or a horizontal kick, angled straight forward.

Dash attack: PM rams the target with his shield, dealing some decent damage, knockback and blocks projectiles. It does have a slight cooldown afterwards, however.

Smashes: Like Megaman, Protoman will use some of the Robot master Powers in his Smashes, however, only from the robot masters in MM9 and MM10, since in those 2 games he is playable. Let's have a look.

Up Smash: Concrete Shot. Protoman angles his buster upwards and shoots a short-ranged blob of cement upwards. If it makes contact with a foe, it will turn into a Concrete block and hurt them. This a pretty slow attack and doesn't deal too much damage, but it's range and knockback more than makes up for it.
Down Smash: Plug Ball. By directing his buster downwards before firing this attack, the Plug ball split into two on the ground and hurts anyone next to Protoman: However, only those on the ground. Very fast, deals a lot of damage but has some awful knockback, the complete opposite of the Concrete shot.

Side Smash: Charge Shot (SSB4, you get the seal) or Laser Trident. Instead of shooting this projectile weapon, Protoman uses the Laser Trident like a spear, piercing any target unlucky enough to be in front of him. Since the Trident is pretty long, it has nice range and can be angled upwards for an attack similar to Bowser J.r's up tilt in SSB4.

Aerials
Neutral air: Proto Buster or Shield Block. Like mentioned earlier, this move blocks projectiles and decreases damage. The shield is also a short-ranged attack, dealing very little damage like Link's Side special in old (And new? Don't remember) Crusade.

Forward air: Protoman does a frontflip and finishes with an Axe kick, or Shield Block.

Back air: A horizontal smack with PM's Proto Buster while he turns around, like Falcon's back air.

Up air: Triple Blade. Protoman slashes upwards awkwardly (In a Link utilt fashion) with a Triple blade in his buster, like with the Laser Trident. Slow and deals okay damage.

Down air: Solar Blaze. Protoman fires a small, slow-moving fireball downwards, that explodes upon contact with anything. Has great range and damage, even though it can't meteor smash like the Mega Bomber's down aerial.

Grabs: Jewel Satellite. Directly after creating the shield-like Jewel Satellite around him, Protoman shoots it out in front of him like a boomerang. Anyone hit by this will be trapped in the Jewel Satellite until Protoman throw them away, or they break free.

Forward Throw: Jewel Satellite. Protoman throws the target forward, and then fires the Jewel Satellite at them again, but unlike earlier it doesn't trap them. It just hurts.

Backward Throw: Magma Bazooka. Protoman throws the target down on the ground, then shoots a Magma blast to push the foe backwards. Right after this, he shoots another blast at the target to launch them upwards and finally a bigger blast that knocks the foe away far. So basically, it's ↓-blast, ↙-blast and ←-blast. Surprisingly hard to flee from.

Down Throw: Water Shield. Protoman activates the Water shield and slams the target onto the ground, then letting the Water Shield hit the foe rapidly before knocking them upwards a short distance. Can easily be used to start combos.

Up Throw: Rebound striker. First, Protoman throws the target upwards and grabs a Rebound Striker, a bouncy rubber ball. Then, he quickly bounces it like a basketball to build up power in it before he throws it up at the target. Since the ball is bouncy, this move should have some good knockback, making it a reliable kill move.

Specials

Neutral B: Proto Buster/Charge Shot (I don't think I need to explain this) OR Proto Strike, an extremely powerful and fast beam, but with a slight charge time and cooldown.

Side B: Thunder Wool. First, Protoman shoots out a Wooly Cloud, which can be controlled like Ness and Lucas's PK thunder. If anyone touches this cloud, they will take minimal damage. However, if they attack the cloud, it will disappear, and the player will take control of Protoman again. However, if the player presses B while in control of the cloud, a thunderbolt will hit the ground and the cloud will disappear. The closer the cloud is to the ground, the more damage it will deal. The most damage it can deal is 20%, and the least it can deal is 3%, from the top of the screen. A small detail could be the thunderbolt becoming smaller the farther it travels. The other option for a side special would be the Proto strike mentioned earlier.

Down B: Proto Shield. Protoman raises the shield I mentioned earlier. This move could either reflect Projectiles, be a counter, or both! Who knows?

Up B (Recovery): Tornado Blow. Protoman is surrounded with small tornadoes that carry him upwards a bit, sort of like Geno's but with about double height. If Protoman is hit with a projectile while this move is used, it is nullified. While used on the ground, projectiles still won't hit him but he won't go upwards. And, when used on the ground, Protoman will be able to jump higher for about 10 seconds.

Final Smash: Big Bang Strike. Protoman fires an incredibly powerful, large and hard to dodge beam forward, almost guaranteeing a kill on anyone who gets hit. However, PM takes 70% damage from using this move and is stuck in place for about 4 seconds, leaving him very vulnerable. High risk, high reward. Here's the only gameplay video of it I could find: It says Hadoken instead of Big Bang Strike for some reason, but it still shows how powerful it is by breaking a shield Bass couldn't even scratch.

Overall, Protoman should handle alot like neM ageM, but with just enough differences to not make him a clone. He should be pretty frail, but makes up for it with greater power and a highly useful shield. To beat him, you need to take advantage of his cooldowns and never give him a second to counterattack.

Not a very big fan of Protoman. It's no simple task to separate him from Mega Man, which you did pretty well, but unfortunately, it's a no from me. Sorry.

While I'm a huge Mega Man fan, some parts of this moveset seem off. When did he ever beat all of the Robot Masters in MM1? He never even appeared until 3... if anything, he should focus on 9 and 10, as that's where he was playable and could use the enemy moves. I suppose you could mention Powered Up on the PSP... but I forget if he could actually use the other moves in that game.

Unfortunately, even so, Protoman's main unique point is his shield, which isn't any more unique than Link....

The wiki page http://megaman.wikia.com/wiki/Proto_Man states that, in Mega Man Powerered up, Proto man quotes all of the first Robot Masters (Exept Bomb and Guts man) after beating them. Have a look.

To be honest, I haven't played that many Mega Man games myself, but I still love Protoman, even to the point to him being my favorite character in the franchise. This is just an experimental moveset I was able to put together with my experience from the few Mega Man games I've played and the wiki's information on him. I just feel like Mega man needs more reps in Crusade. If Street fighter gets two (And a half, Evil Ryu?) reps and Sonic gets Four (Really? FOUR!?) I think Mega man deserves another rep. I think of Protoman as the Knuckles of the Mega Man universe, and Bass as the Shadow. Seriously, we don't need Bass in the game. Protoman>Bass 5evah.

But take a look at that page: "In this game, he has advanced jumping and mobility, but cannot slide, copy weapons or charge his buster like in other games."
He can't even use those moves from the MM1 Robot Masters. However, due to DLC in MM9 and the main MM10 game, he CAN use those moves. That gives you 16 moves to work with. You can also borrow from the Power Fighter games, since he's playable in that and can use all of the enemy moves...but I think we should try to stick to 9 and 10, separating him from Mega Man.

If Mega Man gets another classic rep, it should probably be Roll. She has more potential to be unique with her broom. But most people here would probably go for an X series rep (Either X or Zero).

There, I've replaced all MM1 moves with MM9 and MM10 moves, and made unique grabs too. Check it out.

Roll would be kind of dumb to add as a secondary fighter. That's like adding Peach before Luigi just because she has more unique moves. It just wouldn't make sense. Peach isn't really the kind of character that would fight and neither is Roll (With a few exeptions like Super Princess peach and Marvel VS Capcom). A Mega Man X rep would be...okay, but for Zero to be added we would most likely have to add X, and that would be kind of dumb too, as they are even more similar: A straight-up clone, if you will.

Pretty good, I like it overall. A few things I don't like, but it's nice representation of 9 and 10.
