Assuming characters are cut, it' always possible they'll be re-added via DLC anyway.

And regarding Toon Link, do people not remember what MVC3 did with Tron Boone, in that she was background character in her stage when not being played, but wasn't in the bg when being used by a player? Who's to say Smash 4 won't do the same with TL?

I would say worst case scenario is 5 characters cut. In reality, it will likely be 3 or less. To have nearly half the roster on your 50/50 and lower categories is ridiculous.

TL is already a background character on the 3DS stage for Spirit Tracks, he conducts the train you fight on. So yeah, I think his removal is almost certain.

It should also be said that Doomsday was in the background of an Injustice stage, when he was playing they just used his alt-skin in the background.

However I still doubt this is the case, if you look at Toon Link on the Spirit Tracks stage he is very low-res, if he was planned for the game he would have a much better model.

you're suggesting that they're are going to cut the "main" villain of the zelda zeries? that'd be like cutting bowser -_-

You DO realize that this also goes for the non-returning characters from Melee too, right? There is nothing suggesting that he meant Brawl characters only.

If time constraint is gonna be the main cause of veteran characters getting cut, then I'm gonna pray for a major delay. lol.

I would hate to get the feeling of wanting to play the previous titles just to enjoy the characters that didn't make it. Not to mention crossing my fingers to see them return for SSB5.

It was said in an interview that no DLC has been planned, but there is still the possibility. Sakurai said he just wanted to put 100% of his focus on the core game to give it max content on release.

Put simply, yes.

He may start thinking about DLC when all that's left is minor balancing, but until then don't expect even a confirmation of DLC.
