The Ice Climbers are good characters, but I will give you the reason they were cut out as they were originally going to be in SSB4

The 3ds could not handle 8 players on-screen at once which would have happened if you got all the characters to be Ice Climbers. Since Sakuri wanted the 3ds and Wii U versions to have the exact same character list, the Ice Climbers was just a mountain too big to go over.

I just thought that at least the announcement of some runner-ups making it would be nice.

But we should be grateful Sakurai even did DLC. Even if the choices were somewhat questionable, the man has extended Smash 4's longevity.

The only reason I expected more than one winner is because I always thought the ballot was supposed to be a suggestion box, not a popularity contest.

Not a huge fan of Bayonetta, but she's a deserving enough candidate for Smash, and her moveset looks really cool.

However, as someone who defended four Fire Emblem characters at launch, AND Roy as DLC, which meant that this series had more reps that all but Pokemon, Mario, and Zelda(if Sheik is counted separately), I am ENORMOUSLY angered by the choice of Corrin.

1. Obvious marketing ploy. He physically cannot be a truly favorite character of anyone yet because his debut game doesn't release until February(iirc)...the same month the Smash 4 DLC is released. HMMMMMM

2. Another anime boy swordsman. I don't care that he has some weird convoluted dragon shapeshift thing.

3. Correct me if I'm wrong, but he's a custom player character, right? If so, then he is a conceptual, if not actual, clone of Robin and therefore redundant on a Character basis, if not a gameplay one.

4. Fire Emblem now out-represents Zelda, and ties with Pokemon, Nintendo's 2nd most popular franchise. Zelda is the third highest selling and likely third most popular Nintendo franchise, followed by Donkey Kong and then Kirby. None of these are Fire Emblem, so what the hell?

I'm pretty underwhelmed by the character announcements.  They look cool, but they certainly wouldn't be my first choice.  I will buy Bayonetta, don't know if I'm gonna get FE guy # 6.  His moveset looks pretty interesting, but I'll wait to see it played online first.

Honestly, I was pulling for Shantae even know I knew she didn't have an actual chance.

EDIT: I also would have loved another Namco character, particularly from "Tales of Phantasia" or "Tales of Symphonia." Although the games are small enough in terms of popularity that they only warrant the Mii costume.

I was truly not expecting Bayonetta. I know she was fairly high on the list of requests, but, still. I also wasn't expecting them to only include one character from the ballots. I mean, even having the top two would at least cater to the desires of a significantly larger amount of their fans. Instead, they chose to have a SIXTH rep for FE.

Now, look, I think Fire Emblem is good. Not Nintendo's best franchise, but come on. It'd be ridiculous to try and expect it to match up to the likes of Zelda, Metroid, Mario, Pokemon, etc. I also think Corrin looks really cool. But SIX FREAKING FIRE EMBLEM REPS?!? It's a great series; it deserves representation; it's now over-catering to a single chunk of Nintendo's fanbase.

Regardless of whether you were pro-Blue Burrower or pro-Half-Genie Hero, you've got to agree that nearly every character that was in the top tier of Ballot requests would have brought something more important to the table than what Corrin has to offer.
Banjo & Kazooie and King K. Rool both would have represented Nintendo's golden platforming years, from the SNES to the N64, and were highly desired by fans. Both franchises are beloved classics, and one is even 1st party! As for Banjo & Kazooie, Microsoft's CEO straight-up said he'd be fine with Nintendo using their old Rare characters in Sm4sh.
Shovel Knight would have represented indies as a whole, an entire industry of hard-working, successful developers who, more often than not, draw heavy inspiration from Nintendo's games. Shovel Knight doesn't just have a strong literal connection to Nintendo (and an amiibo already), it also represents the love and devotion people have for Nintendo's legacy. Also highly requested. And has three free updates releasing periodically that rework the campaign for drastically different playable charcaters, the first of which has already released.
Shantae is technically indie, depending on who you ask, and so could have sort of represented indies, to an extent. But moreso, Shantae would have represented a popular, unique 2D-platformer series that's always been an underrated 1st party Nintendo title. Again, beloved and highly requested. And has a new game coming soon.
I understand why Solid Snake wouldn't get in, even though it would make total sense, what with Phantom Pain's release, and would have been a great companion inclusion to Cloud as a classic ps1 character. But, alas, FucKonami.
Wolf would have literally had the same marketing effect as Corrin, with Star Fox Zero coming out soon, but for a franchise that is only now returning to the formula it's loved form, and has only ever had a few reps, at the most.
WHY IS RAYMAN A TROPHY AND NOT PLAYABLE?!? They literally have the rights to use him in their game; he's a classic, iconic, beloved character; he could have a great moveset. I don't understand. And to anyone that says it's the impossibility of hi amiibo, just shut up. They'd have made it work.

Honestly, I'm okay with Bayonetta. And as much as I passionately wanted Shovel Knight to be confirmed, I'd have been happy with pretty much any of the above characters. But Corrin just doesn't make sense, aside from a marketing standpoint. Except several of the most desired characters could have used marketing just as much. *sigh*
