AM2R: Return of Samus Empty
PostSubject: AM2R: Return of Samus   AM2R: Return of Samus EmptyThu Jul 07, 2016 2:23 pm

For those who don't know, AM2R is a fanmade remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus in the same vein as Metroid: Zero Mission. The gameplay is smooth, fluid, and satisfying; the map is expansive and atmospheric; the story has been expanded on, and new environments have been added. In essentially every way, this is the next Metroid game fans have been waiting 12 years for. Incidentally, this project has been in the works for over a decade now. It started with one guy, DoctorM64, and has expanded to a small team of people devoted to this passion project. If you're skeptical about how good it is, you can still download the last demo to see for yourself. If you're a Metroid fan, this is going to be a godsend, provided Nintendo doesn't C&D it.

http://metroid2remake.blogspot.com/

EDIT: Nintendo has gotten the download links for AM2R taken down. Sadly, we all knew this was a likely outcome. Fortunately, the game got out to people, so if you didn't download it, head over to the Metroid subreddit. There are people there that'll help you out.

https://www.reddit.com/r/Metroid/

EDIT: Version 1.1 has been released. It patches some minor stuff, makes a few QOL adjustments, and fixes a couple more major issues some people were having, like the invisible Gravity Suit bug. It automatically detects your old save files, so you'll be good there. I don't know if you can delete the 1.0 folder, though, so maybe keep it around just to be safe. If you haven't downloaded it yet, go ahead and get it while the new links are still up.

I've been following this for years.

I couldn't be more excited for this!  This is the single best fan game I've witnessed.

sorry fellow crusade devs

I'm not one who plays metroid, but to those who are interested, AM2R has its first public release out TODAY RIGHT NOW. That is all

YOO NEW METROID (sorta I mean it's a remake but it's still superb) Go download it quick we don't know how merciful Nintendo will be.

EDIT: Seriously, guys. If you like Metroid, go download this. It's genuinely on par with Nintendo's quality. Go. You owe it to yourself. Even if you don't plan on playing it right now, at least download it now while you can, so you can play it whenever you want.

It really is a fantastic remake. It's easily on par with Zero Mission. I'll need to play more of it before I make any claims comparing it to Super, but I would place this above Fusion imo.

Considering I have had very little experience with Metroid, I am definitely loving it, and part of that may be due to my enjoyment of playing Freedom Planet and Shantea (Yes, they have nothing in common with Metroid, but they still take alot of inspiration from 90s games). Only played for a few minutes, but I can already tell I am a bad shot when I am moving Embarassed, but at least I am enjoying being a bad shot. I'm also not use to the default jump button (Thanks Freedom Planet), but I can always re-map the controls Smile

It may not have been Nintendo, as there's at least one well-known former employee who's been DMCA'ing projects despite not actually representing Nintendo and having no jurisdiction to enforce any legal action on their behalf.

Even if it was indeed Nintendo, all that was DMCA'd was the Metroid Database torrent link. The game is still up to download on the main site, and there's no talk on the subreddit or the forum of legal action on Nintendo's part, which somewhat leads me to believe it wasn't actually Nintendo that sent the DMCA, since I'd imagine they'd go for the source of the game, and MdB was just being safe by taking down the link.

See for yourself, it's still up. http://metroid2remake.blogspot.com/

EDIT: Now all the official links have been taken down. No word yet from DocM64 or the other devs, but looks like Nintendo shut it down. At least we had enough time to get it for ourselves. Sorry, everyone. If you want to play AM2R, there are people on the Metroid subreddit who'll help you out. I'll update the OP.

Nintendo also just DMCA'd another fan game called Pokemon Uranium. Makes me worried about Crusade's long term prospects, to be honest.

Also a fangame many years in the making. Between those two and the takedown of the Nintendo Power issues archived online, it's been a tough week to like Nintendo.

I can't really say I blame them for AM2R and Nintendo Power.  One is a full-on remake of one of Nintendo's own games (not to mention using tons of ripped assets from official games while doing so), and the other was an illegally uploaded series of magazines.  I don't know anything of the pokemon thing, but I do think these make sense.

If you notice, Doc's other Metroid fanwork, Metroid: Confrontation (it's also really good btw, if you haven't already tried it, I recommend) is still up as always.

AM2R actually uses a ton of original assets. In fact, one of the things they wanted was to use only original assets, and they may release a patch eventually doing just that. As for Nintendo Power, it's not like Nintendo is selling those or making any money off of them. I don't know much about Uranium either, other than it's essentially a full Pokemon game just like AM2R is a full Metroid game. I do understand to an extent why they do this, but this has still been a terrible week for Nintendo's public perception.

It is interesting that Confrontation is still up, especially since it almost exclusively uses ripped assets, but it may because it's more derivative and of lower quality, while AM2R is on par with Nintendo's games and provides a vastly better, free version of a game Nintendo is selling.

I wasn't even (initially) too interested in AM2R (Only a little past experience with Metroid), but I got it and love it. Shame it got taken down, but I think the fact that it was so well created that caused it to be removed

Though, as it happens, I am stuck in the area where you get the Space Jump and Speed Dash.

The Industrial Factory, right? Have you gone through the Mining Facility? I sorta recall the Metroid counter lumping the two areas' Metroids together. Very well could be totally wrong, though. For me, getting stuck is usually the result of missing an unopened door or passage on the map. If you're really stuck, you can PM me a screenshot of your map.

Regardless, great to see AM2R got someone into Metroid!

Yeah. Realized that there was a floor that required Super Missiles. I even told myself that there was one Facepalm

I am also not a fan of the Dino-Like Metroids (The Zeta ones?). Either way, glad I could continue the game

Oh, yeah, I remember that. It's easy to forget until you go back that way and see the floor for yourself. You could also go to the left just by that floor and get to the same place.

Do you not like their visual design or the mechanics of fighting them? Or do you just mean they're difficult and you're having a tough time beating them?

Also, gonna update the post with this, there's a new version out. It patches some minor stuff, makes a few QOL changes, and fixes a couple more major issues some people were having. It automatically detects your old save files, so you'll be good there. I don't know if you can delete the 1.0 folder, though, so maybe keep it around just to be safe.
