Metroid Series Poll

I've noticed a sparse lack of Metroid reps on the Suggestion Poll save for Anthony Higgs, and Anthony comes from what's regarded as the worst Metroid game out there. Many fans shun that game entirely because of the unbearable-at-times plot, and I can honestly say that I didn't care for it either. Now personally, I'd rather have someone like Dark Samus or Rundas. And Metroid truly does deserve the extra reps; it has sold more than StarFox and Fire Emblem, that much I know for sure, and it's sold more than the two combined last I checked. Metroid is seriously underrated, and while 5 reps counting Zamus is a seemingly large number, it's still not much when you look at Sonic's 4 reps, or Star Fox's 4 reps assuming Wolf eventually comes into the picture.

I'll talk about Dark Samus first. Before anyone says anything about cloniness, I'd like to make it abundantly clear that Dark Samus is only a clone in name and general shape of body. Unlike such clones as Dr. Mario or Toon Link, Dark Samus does not fight, move, sound or behave in a manner remotely similar to Samus, and it barely even looks like her.
It fights with eruptions of energy from the ground forming shields around it. It fights by morphing into a ball, admittedly like Samus, but unlike Samus, it zooms around mach speed in that ball form. It charges up its cannon and fires a spray of bullets. It fires globs of pure Phazon at breakneck speeds. It can hover. It can rise a few feet into the air and dive headfirst into the ground at almost terminal velocity, and survive. It can disperse into Phazon particles and reappear elsewhere. It can make two ghostlike echoes of itself and regenerate while those two fight. Heck, it's the Metroid Prime's essence crammed into a stolen suit of armor that's been heavily modified.
I must kindly ask that anyone who wishes to badmouth Dark Samus as a simple clone does their research before doing so, even if it's only watching the videos of its boss fights, so they can see that Dark Samus is a clone only in name. Moving on, however, I'd like to talk about Rundas next.

This is my personal choice if I only could choose one. Rundas from Prime 3 is a Phrygisian bounty hunter. His race can generate and control ice. He is a little taller and heavier than Samus, and stronger as well, with what I would say are Solid Snake-like stats.
Rundas was a bounty hunter working for the Galactic Federation, who quickly befriended Samus. He prevented a Pirate ship from blasting Samus down, and later saved Samus from going splat during her freefall fight with Ridley in a generator shaft. Later on, he was corrupted by Phazon. Due to Dark Samus' influence further corrupting him, Rundas was forced to attempt to kill Samus, setting up what is quite possibly the most emotionally intense battle in the entire Prime series. Ultimately he used his own ice powers to send an ice spear through himself to stop the corruption.
Naturally, in Crusade, he'd use his ice to fight. His moves would involve his ice attacks, his ice armor, and the ice claws on his hands. Rundas can ride on a stream of ice, reminiscent of Frozone or Iceman, or fire off a strong rocket of ice and freeze whatever it hits. He can conjure up a small spiky wall of ice in front of him. He can send a sort of laser forward and freeze whatever that hits as well. He can also enter Hypermode to charge up his attacks with Phazon.
Rundas is a beloved character among the Metroid fanbase; many Metroid fans cite him as being their choice after the obvious Ridley and Dark Samus. We've already got Ridley in, so that brings us Rundas fans that much closer.

There are other characters that I'd normally like to talk about, but I don't have time to type much else up.

metroid is represented perfectly with samus and ridley

it isn't a series known for its diverse cast of recognizable characters like mario, pokemon or even fire emblem, it's driven mostly by its gameplay and atmosphere.

a series "deserving" representation shouldn't be based on sales or popularity. it should make sense and be true to the source material. adding more characters for the sake of padding out the roster/filling a nonexistent quota is an irresponsibly poor design choice

and we all know crusade has already suffered through enough poor design choices

I vote for no more characters - it's unneeded. If anything they need to focus on having every Smash veteran first IMO. Robin and Lucina and all that crap. Samus, Zamus, and Ridley is enough.

Fair enough; I can see where you're coming from, Minerva, but as a counterpoint I'd like to point out that Ridley is barely featured at all in the Prime Trilogy, which, alongside Super Metroid, is considered the best Metroid game(s) of all time, and the first Prime makes many 'Top 10 Games Ever' lists. With that in mind, wouldn't one Prime character like Dark Samus be fair to add? Dark Samus is the main villain of the trilogy and is featured far, far more prominently than Ridley. Heck, Ridley wasn't even in Echoes, and he could've been removed from Corruption (And Fusion, looking at the originals) completely without changing the plot any.
Having only Samus and Ridley doesn't fairly rep three of the four most beloved games of the series with that in mind. But that's my personal opinion and if you're dead-set on only repping Zero Mission, Super and to a much lesser extent Fusion and Other M, then that's your opinion as well.

add dark samus to the poll or whatever if there's demand for it. I'm not against it by any means.

it's the argument that "we need to add [thing] because, like, it deserves, like, representation, ya know?" I was picking at

people in communities like this need to stop looking at things in quantitative terms and start seeing things realistically. if a suggestion would just create dead weight for the developers, it's probably best not to implement it unless demand is high or it is somehow a necessity.

Telara, we're clearly all voting for no characters, lol. Why would we vote something different after completely agreeing with minerva's post? Besides, the first line of his post is "metroid is represented perfectly with samus and ridley". If that's not a vote I don't know what is.

As for Ridley, I agree that Metroid's second rep could have gone to either him or Dark Samus, but the argument about representation is a bit confusing for me. Why would you need Dark Samus to rep the Prime series? Samus already does that fine.

The other thing is that Ridley doesn't just rep the Metroid series, he partially reps the SSE. You might have noticed how a lot of Ridley's moves actually come from his appearance as a boss in Brawl. We did that because, c'mon, isn't it awesome to play as a boss from Brawl?

Rundas is awesome, and Dark Samus works as an alternate form for Samus actually well.
