to milk their young Not exactly, Zacharie. Milking is the purpose of boobs, but the actual reason is evolution. Because , lactation, the creation of milk, is attributed to a rather complex system found in mammals only, it must have evolved from a far more simple system in regards to structure, purpose and form. The exact nature of the ancestor of lactation is unknown, but there are many assumptions about it. The most famous hypothesis is that lactation glands originate from glands related to hydrating eggs. The eggs of the early mammals were non rigid and non calcified, enabling the loss of water which happens to be crucial for the embryo. Monotremas are a mammal group which reproduce through eggs. Much like hippocampuses, these animals hydrate their eggs by placing them within enclosures formed off their bodies and hydrating them through said glads throughout the skin. These animals do not have nipples and the enclosures either are actual pouches, or not. Either way, they are not used to carry infants. Through evolution, the glands grew in size and were centralized in the chest area. The breast size and amount of nipples in women takes into account the size of a human infant as well as the fact that humans stand upright; more nipples and more mass would probably restrict movement too much. Plus, women rarely give birth to more than 2 babies at a time. Sources:
