PostSubject: Sigurd (Fire Emblem) Discussion: The Legendary Martyr of Jugdral   Thu Jul 21, 2016 12:50 pm

Well, I said I'd make a Sigurd thread, and here it is.

Who is Sigurd?
Sigurd is the main Lord character of Fire Emblem IV: Genealogy of the Holy War, a relatively early Fire Emblem game obviously only released in Japan (as it came before Fire Emblem 7). However, Fire Emblem's increased popularity in the west has naturally led to a number of fan translations for the SNES classic. Genealogy is the one of the only two Fire Emblem games released for the SNES, alongside the apparently far-more-difficult Thracia 776.

Why Sigurd?
While it can be said that we have enough choices from the Fire Emblem series, few of the main characters are very unique - most of them are just lords on foot who fight with a sword, and nearly all of the Fire Emblem characters playable in Smash fit this exact description aside from Robin (Chrom and Lucina, however, also from Awakening, fit this stereotype to a T). Sigurd, however, is still to this very day one of the most unique and popular lords in the entire series because he not only fights on a horse (meaning increased movement), but from the start, he is pre-promoted and has the ability to use lances as well as swords. And despite starting out pre-premoted, Sigurd will surely never fall behind in the game with his immense strength and will be one of the best, strongest units you will ever control in the series up until his tragic death in Chapter 5 of the game. All in all, his unique fighting style and mount would bring something fresh and new to Crusade's scene.

Okay then, on to the important thing: how would he fight?
Sigurd wields the "Tyrfing" for his sword and "Sigurd's Lance" for his lance. Unlike other Fire Emblem characters, and unlike any other character Smash has seen so far, Sigurd spends the entire time fighting on a mount, his horse. This gives Sigurd excellent movement speed. Plus, when the horse itself is struck, Sigurd takes less damage. However, he isn't without his weaknesses - when Sigurd himself his struck, he takes slightly more damage than usual, and thanks to the horse, Sigurd is a very large target with high weight who can be easily combo'd. Additionally, despite his weight Sigurd's attacks aren't as strong as most heavyweight fighters' attacks, his strongest attacks tend to be fairly slow and, additionally, like most Fire Emblem characters, Sigurd's projectile game is basically nonexistant, forcing him to get in close to dish out damage. While the result is a rather below average fighter at its core, Sigurd has a few tricks up his sleeve to even the playing field: skills. If Sigurd's skills activate, they can turn the tide of battle in a powerful way.

Moveset:

If you feel I could make any changes to the moveset, feel free to make suggestions.

Color Palettes:

Tl;dr: Sigurd is a Fire Emblem Lord, but on a horse and he can use lances and swords to fight. He's fast, but heavy and has average damage. However, he can take advantage of the skills he has at his disposal to preform better, such as Pursuit to strike twice.

An interesting change from Fire Emblem. It would be odd (but neat) to see someone on a mount, and the fact that you took Bowser Jr's trait from Smash 4 could be applied to other "Mount" characters. Due to the shear size of possible Fire Emblem characters, and the uniqueness of Sigurd, I will support.

I do think that "Pursuit" shouldn't activate if Shooting Star activates (and vice-versa), because that would be WAY too powerful, not to mention the fact that it would be due to chance (and a very limited one), making it virtually impossible to avoid should it happen.

Well, the idea was going to be a much rarer version of Mr. Game and Watch's 9, but...come to think of it, I added that before adding his neutral special idea (which lets him increase the odds of his skills activating), so I think you're right about that all things considered. I'll change it.

Oh hey! A FE game that I've heard as one of the best but never played! An idea of a fighter on a horse sounds silly, but considering Bowser Jr's now a thing, I'm sure it'll work. Really like the moveset for the most part, especially the skill mechanic. Though the FS and SSpecial I disagree with, considering summoning isn't really something that a warrior with melee relies on unless it's a FS, and the FS involving Sigurd hiding is kinda lame. Why not have Sigurd get slightly damaged to Arvis's attacks? Arvis's attacks doesn't really need to kill, but set up for kills, but can still harm Sigurd since he's the antagonist for the first half. As for the SSpecial, Robin can use Nosferatu without being a Dark Mage, and PoR/RD characters can activate Nihil on will, so I think having an alternate to a tome for the attack could work, because summoning just seems too out of place. Though Deidere can make a Cameo in his win pose.

Other than that, you got yourself a support.

I'm going to support, but I'm not exactly sure which Fire Emblem reps I'd like for the game, espcially since I want both Roy and a FE7 rep (meaning Lyn or Hector).

Well, assuming you want me to keep Nihil (which I hope you do because I like the idea of the move, lol), there's no problem removing Dierdre for the attack. The reason I had her being summoned to use the move was mainly because Dierdre actually can use the skill in FE4, so I thought it'd be cooler than just having Sigurd use it when his wife can. Though her appearing out of nowhere for one move is a bit odd, I'll admit.

As for the Final Smash...while I think Sigurd taking damage during it isn't a bad idea, I don't think that all it should do is set up for kills in that case. Compare it to Lucas's FS, for example - giant stars fall from everywhere and death is almost guaranteed at any percentage above 0%, and Lucas takes no penalty from it whatsoever. If Sigurd took damage during his FS but it rarely killed anyone, then it would just be plain worse I think (also, gotta take types of matches besides Stock into consideration too, especially when coming up with final smashes which aren't usually used in competitive fights anyway - setting up for kills means next to nothing in Time and Knockout if you don't score the KO, after all). It'd be cool if he had a high risk/high reward final smash though...something like a nearly unavoidable screen-wide nuke that would kill almost everyone, but Sigurd would take a fair bit of damage himself or maybe even a bit of knockback. That's never been done...

Yeah, high risk/high reward would be cool and challenging. And yes, I like the concept of Nihil, so I don't want you to remove it.

I don't like the sound of the "High Risk/High Reward" Final Smash, but that would still be interesting. It is currently only on paper; maybe it would be much better than I think in practice.

Support!

Might I suggest replacing Nihil with Canto? Have him bring his horse to a gallop, but have him be able to use all his standing moves even while moving.
