DEBUT: Metal Gear (1987)
LATEST APPEARANCE: Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (2015)Big Boss is one of the most major characters of the Metal Gear storyline, and the main character of his own saga; Metal Gear Solid 3, Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker, and Metal Gear Solid V, which consists of Ground Zeroes, a “prologue” to The Phantom Pain. While not appearing in Metal Gear Solid 1 or 2, his actions are the driving point for much of the franchise.
While Solid Snake, the lead character of the franchise, obviously is much more prominent then him, Big Boss is arguably the second most important character of all.
Big Boss, of course, would be an alt, because Snake is actually a literal clone of him. Due to them having the same DNA and Big Boss basically being Snake’s father, I believe he would be much better as an alt. It would also save roster space.
I’m sure you’re suspicious already of Big Boss; I can’t blame you! Like always in my threads, I’m going to go over and refute major arguments against Big Boss.
He Looks Just Like Snake!I am going over this because I do recall Dust or someone else saying that the fandom once got very mad because they thought Gooey was Slime…look-alikes may be a slight problem.
You have to understand WHY Big Boss looks like Snake; it’s essential. Snake is a clone of Big Boss, literally.
Also, it is very easy to make Big Boss look quite a bit different from Snake. There are several different things we can do; combine his MGS3 and MGS: TPP design, or simply use TPP’s design, due to that being perhaps the most distinctive Big Boss design yet. There are tons more possible.
Also, Snake doesn’t have a ROBOT HAND. Case in point; just because he looks a lot like Snake (VERY EASILY explainable) doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be given a chance.
How Could He Even Be Different From Snake, Moveset-Wise?First off, the mentioned robot hand really changes up his neutral game and grab game. He can pull off various CQC (Close Quarters Combat) techniques that Snake doesn’t have in his moveset.
Also, is there really a big problem with Big Boss sharing one or two moves with Snake if he has so many others that AREN’T shared?
To summarize: Bionic hand, several different guns, more CQC techniques, different grab game… Yeah, trust me, he can be a LOT different.
We Don’t Need Another Metal Gear Rep!MGS REVOLUTIONIZED the stealth genre; it CREATED IT. IT CREATED A GENRE. It is one of the most praised game series of all time with millions and millions of fans world-wide, with all games getting marvelous reviews and just as marvelous sales. It is one of the most accomplished gaming series EVER.
Also, it’s not like it’d be a bother; As I’ve told numerous people, we don’t really have a character limit. Nor would it make some kind of bad impression on fans, because Big Boss is a Snake alt, and you must select Snake and switch to Big Boss to play as him.
MGS has achieved and done much more then so many other 3rd party series wanted for Crusade and even IN Crusade. To be honest, it DESERVES a second rep. And come on, Sonic gets 4 reps and MGS gets 1?
Big Boss Over Raiden?Yes, here's why.
Raiden is the protagonist of MGS2 and Metal Gear Rising Reavengance.
Big Boss is the protagonist of...MGS3, MGS Peace Walker, MGS Ground Zeroes, and MGS The Phantom Pain. He also arguably has a much more important role then Raiden. He's starred in many more games as well.
Well, Okay…But, How Does He Play? This is still a bit rough, but here goes.
Big Boss is a lot like a closer-ranged, harder hitting Snake. Unlike the sluggish Brawl Snake, Big Boss is rather nimble; he’s a trained soldier. He also can crawl.
He utilizes various techniques in his neutral attacks. He is focused on brute force neutral-wise and is about getting the enemies damage racked up then finishing them off with a powerful Smash attack, but he has many great kill moves.
His specials involve things like a Fulton, and various guns, such as The Patriot. They are focused on staying at a bit of a distance, however, except for the Fulton, which is..very unique, as you’ll see.
What About The Moveset?Glad you asked!
Big Bosses NeutralsNeutral Attack: Big Boss quickly swipes forward his hand in a cat-like motion (inspired by Revolver Ocelot)
Jab: Big Boss swipes his hand forward in a cat-like motion two times, then curls his hand into a fist and slams his opponent in the cheek.
Side Tilt: Big Boss does the same cat posture, but slams a hand forward, and immediately after performs another punch and a kick in rapid succession.
Up Tilt: Big Boss swipes both hands upward, stretching his arms out (just for you)
Down Tilt: Big Boss does two things for this. If he’s not crawling, he simply puts his hands behind him on the ground and kicks both feet out. If he’s CRAWLING, then he swipes his hand forward, which trips the opponent.
Dash Attack: You need to be close to the opponent to properly carry out this attack. Big Boss grabs the opponent by the neck then slams them down to the ground, causing a short amount of stun.
Big Bosses Smash AttacksSide Smash: Big Boss gets out the water pistol. It fires in spurts, and the more you charge, the more spurts are shot out out with a larger hitbox and higher damage.
Up Smash: Big Boss throws a grenade upward, then snipes it! Charging it makes the grenade go lower and have a larger explosion. Lower because the explosion doesn't damage Big Boss, so one would want it as low to the ground as possible.
Down Smash: Big Boss throws down a landmine, which explodes after a few seconds. Charging causes it to explode faster with a larger explosion.
Big Bosses SpecialsNeutral Special: Big Boss pulls out The Patriot, the gun given to him by his mentor, The Boss. It’s an assault rifle so it shoots at a quick pace. You can move while shooting it, but you cannot jump. It has good range but doesn’t make the opponent flinch, so it’s good for racking up damage if you manage to trap an opponent against a wall or such. You need to reload after shooting it for a while, but you never run out of ammo or have to pick ammo up, because it canonically has “infinite” ammo!
Side Special: Big Boss yells "ROCKET PUNCH" (or rarely, "ROCKET PUNCH" in Japanese) and taps his bionic hand, which launches forward. It goes at a steady pace but you can make it go faster by holding the special button. The hand is very quick in how fast it goes when you input something so it's hard to reach the hand behind an opponent, so it's very good to keep an enemy away if they're right infront of you.
Up Special: THE FULTON. This is one of Big Boss’s wackiest and coolest moves. It’s also very unique.
If you’re standing next to an opponent, the fulton is attached to them. They’re suspended in the air, and can wiggle out of the fulton, but if they don’t in time, they blast off into space, most likely netting a Star KO.
If you’re next to no one, then Big Boss ties the fulton around himself and is suspended in the air. He shoots upward, but not too fast; fast enough that if you have decent reaction timing you could easily recover from off the stage. Also, if Big Boss does this in the air, the fulton is still suspended, so you can meteor smash him.
Down Special: Big Boss throws down a Decoy. It stays on stage for 5 seconds, and if attacked, explodes. It takes a few seconds to set up the decoy, but if you can set it up well, then you have an easy KO on your hands.
Big Bosses AerialsNeutral Aerial: Big Boss slams forward The Patriot's behind, like he's pistol whipping.
Forward Aerial: Big Boss hurriedly swings his bionic arm forward.
Back Aerial: Big Boss doesn't turn around, as he jabs his elbow backwards.
Upward Aerial: Swings his (plastic) knife in the air.
Downward Aerial: Punches his bionic arm right down from him. Functions as a meteor smash.
Big Bosses Grabs(Big Boss’s grabs are very unique in that they’re focused on stunning and keeping the opponent down instead of throwing them.)
Grab: Big Boss throws both hands outward in a hugging motion. However he clearly doesn’t intend to hug you.
Pummel: Big Boss does hug the opponent…then suddenly starts to choke the opponent and slams his elbow into their neck multiple times.
Side Throw: Big Boss quickly grabs the opponents leg and arm and, with his other arm, socks the opponent in the face and slams them downward, stunning the opponent.
Up Throw: Big Boss grabs the opponent by their sides and hoists them upward, before throwing them into the air. The opponent doesn’t go very far up but if you react fast you can slam them into the ground with one of your moves. This can burrow opponents.
Down Throw: Big Boss holds a (plastic) knife to the opponents throat and mumbles something to them, and then slowly lets go of them as the opponent slips to the ground, getting stunned.
MiscellaneousTaunt 1: Big Boss lights up a smoke, and smokes. Heals 1 percent of HP for every 5 seconds you smoke it. If you press the taunt button to stop smoking it, it'll stay in your mouth and auto-heal you until you're hit.
Taunt 2: D-Dog is summoned, in his puppy form, and Big Boss picks him up and is smothered in puppy licks and kisses. He's a softie!
Victory Animation: Big Boss hops onto D-Horse, and flashes a thumbs up as he fultons them and they fly upwards to Pequods helicopter.

AND FINALLY..BIG BOSS'S FINAL SMASH!The stage goes dark....and lights back up, WITH BIG BOSS PILOTING METAL GEAR REX! Big Boss can fire off huge bombs, a gatling gun, and slam REX's foot down to burrow opponents. At the end of the move, Big Boss jumps out, and Metal Gear REX explodes, so make sure you get out of the blast radius, because it'll damage Big Boss too.
(Big Boss does not ever pilot REX in canon, but I felt that the Metal Gears, being such huge parts of MGS, should be represented in a fitting way.)
END NOTEThis, I feel, is one of my coolest threads so far. I also think it may be as controversial as Poochy. But I tried my best on this, and it took me an hour to find a proper picture of TPP's Big Boss, so..enjoy, and give feedback as always!
11/9/2015: Wow! I've been blown away by the reception to BB; it's so much better then I thought. This has garnered a ton of support and I'm really proud and happy about it! Thank you all, let's hope for Big Boss!
