The Red Flash
Dillon (Dillon's Rolling Western) Discussion DillonAssist
Background
Dillon is the titular character of the Dillon's Rolling Western franchise.
Dillon is a ranger, he and his partner Russ travel the badlands to protect Villages from the vile Grock creatures. Their origin unknown, but all Dillon needs to know is that defending the town during the Grock's three day raid will help him run into some money to save Russ and his childhood home. Once the two of them appeared to have defeated the Grocks for good, they both disappear for a year. Nobody knew where they went, or why they left. But they were remembered for their heroic actions that saved the Villages.
A year after Dillon and Russ had defeated the Grocks, rumors came up saying they began to resurface and cause havoc once more. When the attacks started to happen, Dillon and Russ returned to defend the villages once more. This time meeting and working with other Rangers and a Train Conductor to protect the Townsfolk and deliver supplies, even if their were some showdowns between themselves on the way through. Together, Dillon and co. were able to defeat the Grock menace one more. And again, Dillon and Russ leave into the sunset. Only saying they were heading east.
Dillon has recently resurfaced back into the public eye, he assists those in need when called upon in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U / 3DS as an assist trophy.
Appearances
• Dillon's Rolling Western - Nintendo 3DS eShop - 2012 - Main Protagonist, Only Playable Character
• Dillon's Rolling Western: The Last Ranger - Nintendo 3DS eShop - 2013 - Main Protagonist, Only Playable Character
• Puzzle Swap (Streetpass Mii Plaza) - Nintendo 3DS - 2013 - Featured on a Puzzle Panel
• Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U - Nintendo 3DS & Wii U - 2014 - Assist Trophy, Song featured on Pilotwings Stage.
• Chibi-Robo! Zip Lash - Nintendo 3DS - 2015 - Costume for Chibi-Robo

Why put him in Crusade?
• Dillon is from a fresh IP, as Crusade currently stands, the "newest" character is Ashley character-wise. In terms of IP, that goes to Olimar (and I suppose Phoenix, but he's younger by a few months).
• The inclusion of Gun Towers and his basis around managing money stand out in comparison to the existing cast.
• Fits in with the Smash cast, he was an assist trophy after all.
• Just in general a pretty cool guy.

Gameplay
In Dillon's Rolling Western, Dillon's main form of attacking involved rolling head onto foes and following up with some sort of attack. In Super Smash Bros. Crusade, Dillon would be a very pressure heavy character. Being able to throw relentless attacks to shield break opponents or combo them off of stages. Doing so will knock money off of opponents, Dillon can use this money to build and manage one gun tower to control a part of the stage. Forcing opponents to stay out of it's range, lowering the amount of room an opponent can run around in making Dillon's ability to pressure much easier.

I for one like this idea, he's a very unorthodox character that I suspect might eve be inspired by the Famicom game Armadillo.

Question is how to make him different from Sonic. :S

Well Dillon's able to act after rolling into opponents, while Sonic just rams into them. Sonic also mostly uses kicks, while Dillon slashes with his his claws. There are more differences I could point out, but I'll just leave that to when I finish up a fitting draft for his moveset. The difficult part is his Up Special because don't want to make it a lame spring type move.

That was just a general backstory. I thought every topic was supposed to have one??

I've never played any of Dillon's games, is that something he can actually do or is that made up?

Good news everybody, I have the moveset (well, the specials anyways) pretty much done.
I just need to type it up. But do you guys want it to be super detailed or just a basic description of what everything does?

Dillon is one character I would actually like to see playable. Though I feel that Dillon should have his Side B be his roll attack while the rest of his move set are something different to avoid the comparison between him and Sonic.

General response is more detailed, which I figured was going to get more steam anyways. So I'll get onto transferring it to the OP soon.

My problem with this is that Dillon's main form of attacking is Rolling. I've tried to make the way he makes use of this attack different to how Sonic works, which is something I think I achieved when creating the moveset.

Three of his specials involve a rolling technique, but they're pretty vastly different in functionality. But I'll let you guys be the judge of that when I finish typing it up. I also think Dillon would be very different from Sonic when it come to their normal attacks, Sonic is very kick heavy and Dillon would be very slash / punch heavy. My moveset doesn't really cover that yet, but I will be getting around to it eventually.

Sure, Dillon's main attack is a grinding roll into the enemy. but the game is half tower-defense. Couldn't one of his specials involve deploying a tower that he can upgrade later? He also has various explosives to help him get materials to build said towers, so he could drop some dynamite as another special.

Thinking about this more, he does have a few friends in the second game... Gallo has a rifle, Boone has a shotgun, and Nomad has a sniper rifle. Russ' helibike will probably end up being his up special...

PostSubject: Re: Dillon (Dillon's Rolling Western) Discussion   Dillon (Dillon's Rolling Western) Discussion EmptySun Nov 09, 2014 10:11 pm

I designed Dillon more as a pressure heavy character, I was always up for a special that focused on managing a tower, but I've seen tons of discussion suggesting that this really counteracted with how a pressure character works. I've got no objection with having a tower be used as his Down Special, I was going to have it be his burrow attack. Maybe I could work on creating a new system based on rewarding pressure to allow him to build towers? Like going for pressure can knock Money off of opponents, and Dillon can create Towers and Upgrade them with that money. Or have the system work through VC bonuses for doing Combos, Kills, etc. The money received would be equal to that of the VC bonuses he gets, and could be shown above his damage meter. Aw man now I gotta remake like a part of his moveset, but what do would you guys prefer?

Being able to upgrade Towers and Equip them with weapons through:
A) Knocking money off of opponents and receiving a set amount for gain KOs, simply touching the money adds it to Dillon's balance. The money would obviously act as the currency to build and equip towers.
B) Obtaining VC Points given to Dillon by achieving certain actions, and by playing well in general (Get a Kill, reach a certain combo, hit opponent with a certain hard to hit move, fill up Smash meter, etc.). The points he earns would act as currency, and he use the points to build and equip towers. You don't need to grab these points, the name of the VC Bonus and amount of points he earned would appear over his Damage Meter or Character sprite.
C) Nothing because towers suck and real men fight with fists.

I'll let you guys decide whether he should use towers or not, and how he could earn the currency to upgrade them.

Now materials, or his tools in general, was going to be interpreted in his Up Special through the use of the "Home" Crystal. I'm not too big of a fan of him using dynamite, seems like a lazy projectile move to me. But if you can convince me, I'll see if I can mix the side and neutral special together.

---
In the mean time, I'm gonna work on a way to get the towers to fit in because I like the idea.

I like A. Makes sure he keeps up his pressure game to help him improve his pressure game. I see the tower as a deterrent - opponents are likely to try to stay away from the turret, giving the opponent less room to maneuver around (and thus making Dillon a bigger threat in the small area they have).

I guess the Home Crystal works for up special. Maybe dynamite can be a smash attack or something instead.

Practically a month and a-half later, I updated the op to be a bit more standardized next to other topics.

Moveset just needs to be written up, but it's very late right now and I need to sleep. The specials should finally be up sometime tomorrow if everything goes correctly. Sorry for the wait.
