Son of Osiris (Age of Mythology) Discussion: "Ina-Jira!" Son%20of%20Osiris_zpsf3jffnay

Son of Osiris is a unit from the game Age of Mythology, a Real-Time Strategy Gem that stood the test of time, resulting in it being remastered just this year (look up Age of Mythology: Extended Edition on steam). For those not familiar with Age of Mythology, it was developed by Ensemble Studios, the same people who made Age of Empires 1, 2 and 3.

Age of Mythology is a game that takes place in the distant antiquity. Legends are real and the offsprings of Gods are very much effecting human civilization. It takes the known Age of Empires formula and gives it a unique twist as, cultures are not only able to use their infantry or buildings, but also the mythological creatures that spawn directly from the lore of each culture.

The original game offered 3 choices; The Greeks, the Egyptians and the Norse. The Titans expansion added the Atlanteans while the upcoming expansion (yes, you heard that right!) will be adding the Chinese!

Not only that, but the franchise has even had games released for the Nintendo DS. Age of Empires: The Age of Kings (2006) and Age of Empires: Mythologies (2008).

"AGE OF" FRANCHISE

  • Age of Empires (PC, 1997)
  • Age of Empires: The Rise of Rome Expansion (PC, 1998)
  • Age of Empires 2: The Age of Kings (PC, 1999)
  • Age of Empires 2: The Conquerors Expansion (PC, 2000)
  • Age of Mythology (PC, 2002) (Son of Osiris is Playable)
  • Age of Mythology: The Titans (PC, 2003) (Son of Osiris is Playable)
  • Age of Empires 3 (PC, 2005)
  • Age of Empires 3: The Warchiefs Expansion (PC, 2006)
  • Age of Empires: The Age of Kings (Nintendo DS, 2006)
  • Age of Empires 3: The Asian Dynasties Expansion (PC, 2007)
  • Age of Empires: Mythologies (Nintendo DS, 2008) (Son of Osiris is Playable)
  • Age of Empires Online (PC, 2011)
  • Age of Empires 2: HD Edition (PC, 2013)
  • Age of Empires 2: The Forgotten Expansion (PC, 2013)
  • Age of Mythology: Extended Edition (PC, 2014) (Son of Osiris is Playable)
  • Age of Empires 2: African Kingdoms Expansion (PC, Announced)
  • Age of Mythology: Tale of the Dragon Expansion (PC, Announced) (Son of Osiris is Playable)

But who is Son of Osiris?

Son of Osiris is a special unit that belongs to the Egyptian culture. It can only be accessed by choosing Osiris as your patron god at the mythic age, and casting the relevant God Power (spells granted by the Gods) onto your Pharaoh. The result is a bird-headed, lighting bolt flinging Pharaoh.

Son of Osiris is also mentioned and involved in the campaign of the Titans Expansion.

Lastly, he is also playable in Age of Empires: Mythologies, meaning he's Nintendo relevant.

Son of Osiris probably represents the Egyptian God Horus in some shape or form, although said God also makes an appearance in Age of Mythology as a patron God.

MOVESET

Overall Son of Osiris is a Medium-Weight spellcaster who specializes in Mid-range combat, but isn't too bad in close range combat either. His Neutral Special, Lightining Bolt is a remarkable Spacing tool that isSon of Osiris's bread and butter, further supplemented by his ability to deploy myth units. These myth units mostly act as his bodyguards; they will only attack opponents at Mid-range but will ignore target that are further, preffering to guard their master. This also is a reference to the fact that in PvP matches in Age of Mythology, Son of Osiris cannot be healed and thus is a prime target of the enemy's attacks. Thus experienced players tend to surround Son of Osiris with friendly units that protect him.

Passive: Empower
Whenever Son of Osiris idle next to a Monument he will empower it, increasing the rate at which it generates favor. (Empowering looks like casting some sort of a spell. It will also result in a column of light appearing above the monument)

Jab: Pharaoh’s Spell
Origin: All cultures in Age of Mythology have access to special “hero” units that are more effective against mythological monster units (referred to as “Myth Units”) and that can pick up relics. In the case of the Egyptians, they always one Pharaoh around, who is capable of attacking by swinging his scepter vertically, throwing some sort of a shiny spell.
Description: Son of Osiris strikes with his scepter in an arc like a Pharaoh. This attack also produces a projectile. Both the swing and the projectile affect the opponent and in fact, the swing has the tendency to throw the opponent towards the projectile. The projectile itself travels slowly and has little range. All in all, this jab is very familiar to Ganon’s jab in function.

Down Tilt: Undermine
Origin: Undermine is a God Power that belongs to the Norse Culture. Its primary use is to destroy walls, although it can also destroy other types of adjacent buildings occasionally.
Description: Son of Osiris puts his foot down, generating a tiny tremor that travels a very short distance. It pushes opponents diagonally away from Son of Osiris. It causes extra damage to structures and items.

Side Smash: Promethean Blast
Origin: The promethean blast was the special attack of Prometheus. Prometheus was a released titan who destroyed the Greek city of Sikyos, and had to be defeated by the heroes of the campaign. The promethean blast in Age of Mythology is a ranged attack that once lands on the ground generates prometheans, middle tiered myth units from the Atlantean culture.
Description: Son of Osiris’ scepter de-materializes. He puts his palms in close proximity as if he would preparing a hadouken, and performs an attack similar to Mario’s forward air. Unlike in Age of Mythology, this is a close range move. However, if you hit an opponent with it, 2 prometheans are generated.

Up Smash: Implosion Sphere
Origin: All cultures in Age of Mythology have God Powers; powerful spells that be used to turn the tide of the fight. Implode is one of them; it generated a peculiar, metallic-looking sphere that absorbs enemy soldiers, myth units and causes surrounding building to lean towards it. It then implodes, generating a powerful shockwave and throwing all units it had absorbed away.
Description: Son of Osiris points his scepter upwards, generating a tiny Implosion Sphere. It attracts nearby enemies and then forcefully expels them. This attack functions very much like Mewtwo’s Up Smash.

Down Smash: Arkantean Tornado
Origin: This is an attack that never be seen in the campaign all normal matches. However it should be familiar to all of those who dabbled in the scenario editor of Age of Mythology which allowed the creation of your own situations in Age of Mythology. This attack is the special ability of Arkantos, the protagonist of the first campaign after he attains godhood. Arkantos grabs his spear by the edge, and spins around, generating electricity.
Description: Son of Osiris spins around holding his scepter in front of him, generating electricity. Hits both sides, but not above him.

Uair: Carnivora
Origin: The carnivora is a God Power of the Atlantean culture. It places a carnivorous plant on the ground or on the water which attacks opponents that walk into range.
Description: Son of Osiris points his hand upwards sprouting a mini carnivore which whips its tentacles around. It is a fast attack that has great range and is meant to juggle opponents.

Dair: Cloud of Lightning
Origin: This move combines two God Powers; Lightning Storm and Rain. Lightning Storm is a Greek God Power that projects numerous thunderbolts in a large radius, and is extremely effective against enemy units. Rain on the other hand is an Egyptian God Power that causes rain to appear above all town centers of the caster and his allies, boosting food production.
Description: Son of Osiris points his hand downwards, creating a large cloud right below him. The cloud last for about a second, creating tiny thunderbolts that spike opponents. This attack isn’t very fast, but has good range.

Neutral Special: Lightning Bolt
Origin: The “Lightning Bolt” attack is only used by very few units, including Son of Osiris, in Age of Mythology.
Description: Son of Osiris points his Scepter forward. A second later, he fires a lightning bolt to the nearest, viable target. It will chain onto other viable targets if they are close enough. It is an extremely fast attack that is very difficult to dodge. However, it can be shielded and, if the target moves out of range before the bolt is fired, Son of Osiris will cancel the attack.

Side Special: Train Myth Unit
Origin: Myth Units play a huge role in Age of Mythology, especially since they are in a rock, scissors and paper relationship with commonplace human soldiers and hero units. Most of them are generated from a temple, although a couple of exceptions exist. Some are created by God Powers while the priests of those who pick Set can convert animals to obedient servants.
Description: Son of Osiris points his hand forward, generating a bright glow out of which a Myth Unit is created playing the characteristic sound effect from Age of Mythology. The Myth Unit is dependent on whether Son of Osiris is on the ground or in the air. On the ground, Son of Osiris generates an Anubite whereas a Phoenix is generated in the air. These Myth Units tend to act more as bodyguards of Son of Osiris than anything else; they will only attack opponents that are in medium range. Myth Units cost favor, so the player will have to spend it smartly.

Up Special: Shifting Sands
Origin: An Egyptian God Power than can teleport troops anywhere on the map.
Description: Son of Osiris is engulfed in moving sand, disappearing, only to re-appear a long distance away. It functions a lot like Mewtwo’s up special. However, it’s slower, covers about double the distance and can also teleport other players and items that are extremely close to Son of Osiris when he begins being covered by the sand.

Down Special: Raise Monument
Origin: In Age of Mythology, in order to train Myth Units besides gold, food or wood you also need an extra resource: favor. Favor represents how well you do your gods’ bidding, and all cultures in Age of Mythology have different methods in which they gather favor. The Egyptians do this by building Monuments; buildings which increase the player’s favor. There are 5 types of Monuments and are built in specific succession; Monument to Soldiers is always built after Monument to Villagers etc. They can also be empowered by your Pharaoh to further increase the rate of favor gain.
Description: Son of Osiris points his scepter to the ground, causing the monument to start building itself from scratch. Once the monument begins its construction, it will continue, regardless of what Son of Osiris does; he does not need to stay in place for the Monument to be built. Once the Monument is built is starts generating favor for Son of Osiris, who uses said favor in order to train myth units. The Monuments themselves are structures on the stage that can be destroyed by your opponent. There is a total of 5 Monuments; the greater the Monument, the more hit points it has but it also generates favor at a slower pace. The fifth Monument is an exception to this, however; it generates favor at the second fastest pace (below the first monument)

Prometheans: Weak units that resemble clay people. They are created upon succesfully landing a forward smash. Unlike Anubites and Phoenixes they disregard Son of Osiris and attack opponents aggresively.

Son of Osiris (Age of Mythology) Discussion: "Ina-Jira!" Anubite
Anubites: Nimble and quick, Anubites are capable of perfoming large leaps that enable them to jump in and out of combat swiftly. They are men with the heads of Jackals, weilding 2 daggers, one in each hand.

Son of Osiris (Age of Mythology) Discussion: "Ina-Jira!" Phoenix
Phoenix: These flaming birds are slow, but pack a lot of firepower. They tend to go directly above their targets and spray fire on top of them.

Thing is, Age of Empires/Mythology would be a PC rep. Sure, it had 2 DS games, but that doesn't mean anything if the majority are PC-exclusive. Imo, the PC rep should be Gordon Freeman, or the Heavy; I feel that Valve has made a bigger impact on PC gaming as a whole then Age of Empires/Mythology

From a quick glance at the Wikipedia page for Age of Mythology, Arkantos seems to be the main character; why not him?

Also, Son of Osiris is only actually playable in like, 4 games out of the 17.

However, the moveset is astounding! You REALLY know your stuff. The Down Special is great especially.

However, you've left out the tilts, grabs, and Final Smash, just so you know.

Overall, while your presentation is amazing and the moveset, once again, astounding, I just can't support. The series having 2 DS games isn't enough to make it really Nintendo relevant compared to other games represented on the Crusade roster. But keep in mind Nintendo relevance is not required for Crusade character threads, and hopefully not for Crusade itself.

Sorry, but no support.

Fair enough Shaq, thanks for taking the time to respond!

The reason why I did not choose Arkantos is mostly because Son of Osiris can rep AOM far better. AOM is a game about Gods, heroes, temples, priests and monsters and Son of Osiris encaptures that better than Arkantos does either by hia appearance or his abilities.

Additionally, Arkantos did not appear in Age of Empires: Mythologies, whereas SoO did.

SoO may be playable in 4 games out of 17, but keep in mind that they are strategy games, most of which have no main character at all!

You are in the fact right in that Gordon Freeman etc have had a bigger influence on PC. However AOM reps strategy games, plus the Advance Wars types of games, since that the sort of gameplay the DS titles had.

I'm glad you liked the moveset! I will add the rest soon too!

Would Advance Wars with Andy and/or Sami as a rep and the Fire Emblem cast not be enough for strategy reps? Gordon himself would rep the shooter genre, which is not currently featured in Crusade.

But AoE:M is simply one game of of the majority, it's kinda like saying that because Ganondorf wasn't in Skyward Sword he deserves less to be in.

Why not simply have Arkantos use attacks from all the different characters and their abillities? He'd basically be an avatar for the numerous different abillities.

I understand that SoO encaptures the whole point of the series more, but I feel the other qualities of the other characters like Arkantos outweighs that factor.

Advance Wars and Fire Emblem would indeed rep strategy games, but not Real Time Strategy games, which is a very popular sub-genre of strategy games. The "Age Of" franchise reps both the RTS sub-genre, plus Advance Wars types of games.

The comparison with Ganondofr is unfair because:
  • SoO was in Age of Empires: Mythologies, whereas Arkantos wasn't. So, he's been in more games than Arkantos.
  • The "Age of" games and Real Time Strategy games are far less character driven than Legend of Zelda.

In my personal opinion, SoO is a far better avatar for the different abilities of Age of Mythology characters/gods than Arkantos. Arkantos in the AOM campaign is your typical general. Son of Osiris on the other hand already has a divine nature which somewhat justifies making the avatar for the game.

I was not aware he was in more games then Arkantos.

Has there ever been an official vote on the most popular patron/route that is chosen? Why not select a character from that route?

I think we just need to rep strategy games. If we rep a sub-genre for the sake of it that wouldn't really make sense. I get they're popular, but very few have any connections to Nintendo, and AoE has very few connections to Nintendo as well.
