| We'll whittle down the starting lineup to just about 42 fighters to start out and discuss how the other fighters should be unlocked.
The original twelve are basically shoo-in's at this point, even Jigglypuff because of the Smash Bros. community's relationship with her. Peach, Bowser and Wario are connected to the Mario Franchise so they're practically no-brainers too! (That makes 15) People got all the third party Characters right out of the gate in SSB4 so Sonic, Snake, Pac Man and Megaman are safe. (19) Snivy's a starter Pokemon, (20) Lucario and Marth have been promoted to playable in Sm4sh, (22) Olimar, Pit and Lucas began their Smash Careers in Brawl's starting lineup so they're all cool. (25) Toss in our Sonic Reps (28), Promoted Bosses (31) and Mewtwo being added to Sm4sh as DLC it all adds up to 32.
And now, the Methods to Unlock Characters I thought up thus far.
Mr Game and Watch: Beat Classic Mode with All Eight Starting Characters from Smash 64/Play 1980 Smash Battles R.O.B: Beat Classic Mode With all the Starting Characters from Melee/Play 1000 Smash Battles Duck Hunt: Beat Classic Mode with all the Starting Characters from Brawl/Play 1500 Smash Battles Mach Rider: Beat Classic Mode with Ice Climbers/Play 800 Smash Battles Ashley: Beat Classic Mode with Wario/Play 250 Smash Battles Klonoa: Beat Classic Mode with Pac-Man/Play 2000 Smash Battles
And the Most Important thing of all...
Goku: Beat all Events/Play 9001 Smash Battles!
So that's 9 Unlockables... Good God we need new characters to break 42.
And in case a tenth new character is programmed into the game...
Shadow: Beat Classic Mode with Sonic and Knuckles under fifteen minutes eaches/Play 900 Smash Battles Ridley: Beat Classic Mode with Samus/Play 500 Smash Battles
Discuss which ten crusaders will make the starting lineup and ponder how we're to unlock the ones that dont.

| I don't like unlocking. I think each character should be on the roster from the game's start. It makes it easier for people to download, jump in, and play against others. This should probably stay this way until we get every single game mode established.
That's just me though. I know a lot of people have some mixed opinion. |

| I'd like unlocking if it's not too tedious. But I don't feel like it's necessary for Crusade. |

| +1. I think unlocking characters will make more sense once we have more single-player modes. |

| Keep in mind that a Single Player mode is not really a mandatory thing for the sake of adding in unlockables. Playing a number of VS Mode matches or even playing specific characters and stages can also be an option. Adding in a Single Player mode or any other modes in general only adds more options for unlockable methods.

Which was exactly my point. "Play as DK on Kongo Jungle 3 times" and "Play X number of matches" is kinda shallow in comparison to what could be done with Break the Targets, Multi-Man, Classic, etc. |

| Here are some ideas:
Shadow: Complete classic mode with Sonic without losing any stock Porky: Complete classic mode with Lucas or Ness (any dificullty) Petey: Play versus matches with all characters of the Mario universe (The order doesnt matter, you can put all characters in one match if you want to) Evil Ryu: Complete all star mode with Ryu Tingle: Complete classic or all star with Toon Link Mewto Play at the stage distortion world with any character Phoenix Wright: Complete some kind of event (Like in melee when you unlock Ganondorf completing a event) |

| I like the idea of unlocking characters; the whole "A New Challenger Approaches!" thing is pretty fun and cool, not to mention iconic. But they probably shouldn't be unlocked solely by insane numbers of matches. Completing certain modes or stages with certain characters is, in my opinion, the way to do it. |

| Please add unlockables. The main reason to solo play Melee was to unlock everything. I love playing with friends, but solo still has its beauty.
Lock some of the least played characters and as for DLC, just add them in an update as unlockables without telling us which ones they are. Please... That's the beauty of Melee as well, when I didn't know how to unlock them and just playing enough did it. So yeah that involves not looking up wikia and multiplayer darn never mind... |

| On Adventure Mode: Beat a random opponent on that court stage in less than a minute on the hardest difficulty for Phoenix Wright to show up after your victory in a small cut-scene with his trademark lines. Fight and defeat him, then beat the rest of Adventure Mode, and you'll unlock him. |

| Why would we want to unlock characters that are already currently playable?
Maybe ones in future demos, but no existing ones. |

| Yeah, you're right, using existing ones kills the surprise. Well if they bring in new characters, they better keep them hidden from the forums as well. Also don't tell us most of the hidden secrets you'll be adding to Classic and Adventure mode. Like Giga Bowser.
Don't forget to consider Storm Shadow as an unlockable. He was in the NES!! He can be Ryu H.'s better Alt since he's with cobra lol. He's the one in the white uniform in my sig. |

| i have some ideas. SSB4 have 13 unlockable characters and we have now 63 characters (and more) so we need a total of 16 unlockable characters in this game because of the bigger roster. any character that has been unlockable on SSB4 (or DLC) or the older games (only the unlockable cut characters) and brawl bosses and SSBC 8.4 can be unlockable in this game also you should battle the unlockable character before you unlock him: 1.Jigglypuff: battle 20 time or clear classic mode as snivy 2.Ness: battle 30 time or clear classic mode as lucas 3.Falco: battle 40 time or clear classic mode as fox or have a battle fox vs krystal in star fox stage 4.Mr. game and watch: battle 50 time or clear classic mode as ice climbers 5.Ganondorf: battle 60 time or clear classic mode as link or have a battle link vs toon link vs tingle in hyrule castle stage 6.R.O.B.: battle 70 time or clear classic mode as mr. game and watch or play in tetris stage 10 times 7.Mewtwo: battle 80 time or clear classic mode as lucario or play in giratina stage 10 times 8.Duck hunt dog: battle 90 time or clear classic mode as mach rider 9.Snake: battle 100 time or clear classic mode as bomberman 10.Pichu: battle 110 time or clear classic mode as pikachu or use pikachu 15 time 11.Petey piranha: battle 120 time or clear classic mode as Toad in hard or play 1 online battle 12.Ridley: battle 130 time or clear classic mode as Samus in hard 13.Porky: battle 140 time or clear classic mode as ness in hard or have a battle ness vs lucas in q*bert stage 14.shadow: battle 150 time or clear classic mode as sonic and tails and knucles or have a battle sonic vs tails vs knucles in casinon stage 15.rayman: battle 160 time or clear classic mode as bomberman and megaman and pac-man or have a battle bomberman vs megaman vs pac-man in final distenation 16.Geno: battle 170 time or clear classic mode as mario and peach and bowser or play in planet core 15 time (it make sense because he is the only square enix character in this game). also i am new here |

Who's "we"? I'd love for some, if not all the characters from 7.0 (or even 6.0) and onwards to be hidden. Just for the sake of unlocking them. Yeah, I'm that kind of guy. |

Yeah, I'm that kind of guy. Either way, it won't bother me really. But the thing that strikes me as odd is the fact that users are sharing unlockable ideas. Those ideas will probably not be used because unlockables are supposed to be secret. |

Yeah, I'm that kind of guy. You're one guy, and I'm one guy. We share differing opinions. An issue many people had with the transition of Smash 3DS to Smash Wii U was the need to unlock characters in both versions, even if everyone was already unlocked in the other one. When I played through the 3DS version, I unlocked them the non-killyourselfuntilyoufighttheopponent way. But when I got the Wii U version, and had to buy a new copy of the 3DS version, I thought it was just better to do it the boring way because I saw no reason to unlock the characters I've already played as. It's tedious and again, a waste of time. If the characters were new, sure I have no problem unlocking new characters. But I'm not super keen in unlocking a character like Geno who's been in the game for awhile. Comes off as a waste of time, you know? |

| I will say that some newcomers being locked in older updates, like the one that introduced us to Rayman and Shadow, were really awesome to unlock. Just a pain since you had to restart I believe? Not sure.
They weren't obnoxious unlocks, though. Pretty sure they were like... battle a few times, or beat Classic as a Mario character, or what have you. |

Tasks as simple as these are completely fine by me, but I refuse to sit through a grinding session of multiplayer battles that dip into the 3-digit range. I'm pretty sure the devs understand that this isn't healthy or fun for any player. |

| The tournament-ready aspect is important, but it is also fun to unlock things. For this reason, I would say we keep the number of unlockables low enough that a below-average-skill-level player could unlock everything in 4-6 hours of play time, which would translate to on-and-off play of about 2-3 days for most people I would imagine.
