PostSubject: Captain Toad (Mario/Captain Toad series) Discussion: HEEY!   Captain Toad (Mario/Captain Toad series) Discussion: HEEY! EmptyWed Dec 17, 2014 10:27 am

So one day, I looked at the Crusade roster and compared it to the SSB4 roster. The first thing that came to my mind was that there were barely any clones in Crusade. I personally like clones most of the time, as they give you more choices with your favorite characters. Want a stronger Pit? Dark Pit is there. Longer range and a faster Link? Toon link is perfect for you. Harder-hitting Captain Falcon? Ganondorf does the trick.

So I began thinking. What character do I think should get a "clone?" The first character that came to my mind was the one and only, Captain Toad. Because of his backpack, he should be much heavier and more hard-hitting than our regular Toad, and I was able to make some unique special moves for our good captain here as well, making him a Toon Link-Esque clone.

But he shouldn't just be added to have another clone. Captain toad is a recent addition to the mario roster, and has already starred in more than three games, one of which was his very own game. All of these games have been incredible, and I think Captain Toad would be an interesting addition, a la Tingle. Let's look at his moveset.

A jab: Like regular toad's, only a bit slower and a bit more powerful. Deals about 13% damage if all attacks hit.
Side Tilt: Instead of a kick, Captain Toad simply punches in front of him, dealing 10% damage when the move hits. Can be angled.
Up Tilt: A surprisingly powerful, but once again slow uppercut. Hits for 15 damage and hits crouching enemies in front of him, but leaves the captain wide open after using it. High risk, high reward.
Down Tilt: An item falls out of the Captain's backpack while crouching, damaging anyone directly in front of him for 6% damage. Directly after using this move, Captain Toad puts the item back into the backpack.
Dash attack: Captain Toad will have about the same dash speed as normal Toad's walking speed, but this attack is still pretty useful. He falls over and, once again, an item falls out of his backpack. When the item lands on the ground, Toad falls down next to it, picking it up again. Because of this, the attack has 2 opportunities to hit. Both attacks deal about 7% each, and Captain Toad easily hits both.

Side Smash: Captain Toad grabs his backpack and slams anyone in front of him with it. Normally deals an astounding 24-29% damage, depending on how long you charge it.
Up Smash: Much like the Side Smash, Captain Toad uses his Backpack in this move too. He holds it in front of him, then pulls it over his head, like normal Toad's up smash. Deals about 23-28% damage.
Down Smash: This is a tricky one, but this is the best thing I could come up with. Captain Toad spins his backpack around him two times, dealing slightly more damage on the second hit. Hits on both sides, with the first hit dealing 10% damage and the second one dealing 12%.

Neutral Special: Captain Toad grabs a random item from his backpack and throws it immediately. Always deals 8% damage, and has an amazing range. However, here's where things get complicated. Every time Captain Toad uses this move, his backpack gets lighter, resulting in him becoming quicker at the cost of not dealing nearly as much damage as before with his smash attacks, becoming half as strong as regular Toad's at the lightest weight. The only way to regain weight in the backpack is to get K.O'd.
Side Special: By using the light on his forehead, Captain Toad stuns anyone in front of him, leaving them wide open for deadly attacks. Can be charged for slightly longer stun-time and range. Deals 2% damage since...well...it's a flashlight.
Down Special: Captain Toad finds a Diamond that can be thrown at enemies like Peach's turnips. However, when the diamonds hit an enemy, they break in similar fashion to Charizard's Rock Smash, hitting the enemy multiple times. Deals 18% damage if all the diamond shards hit, but has terrible knockback.

I don't know about the aerials though...let me know what you think! cheers

We already had Mario, why did they add D.r Mario? To give a different playstyle the same moveset can change a lot of things. I love Dark Pit, Toon Link, D.r Mario and even Ganondorf more than the "Originals", and I think Crusade needs just a bit more of these.

Yep, I am fully aware of that. Which is why, with his neutral B, he can make his backpack lighter, enabling him to jump higher and higher. With the maximum backpack weight, I don't think his jumping should be 100% disabled though: But it should absolutely be worse than Little Mac's. Oh, and I forgot to mention his Up B, right? Well, how about this?

Up B: Captain Toad summons a Starshroom to carry him upwards a bit. The lighter the backpack, the higher he goes before the ship flies off without him, kind of like Snake's up B.

OR, he could summon Wingo to help him, but I don't really see this happening since...well...Wingo is the villain.

Final Smash: The Captain, once again, summons the Starshroom and flies around the stage. While in this state, Captain Toad can drop three members of the Toad Brigade down onto the field to fight for him: A Blue one, a Green one and a Yellow one. When all of these have been defeated, or after a certain time limit, Captain Toad abandons his ship.

OR, he could get the Super Pickax and wreak havoc. Think the Golden Hammer, only stronger and with a longer duration. Gl with nightmares.

I dunno, Captain toad has potential to not be a clone if you use the pickaxe and bag enough.... which is imo better than the current toad (more iconic and relevant).

That's because Captain Toad is a Toad with a name (the name being, well, "Captain Toad").
As in, it's the first Toad to differentiate himself from every other Toad with something that is not simply a different hat.
And no, Toadette does not count, because according to Nintendo, Toadette is actually a seperate species.

Good for him but that doesn't mean he's more iconic. I love him too. But he is not more iconic because he has a name.

I'm not sure if it was different species, I think it had something to do with Toads not having genders or something. I could be wrong.

Yeah, it was all about gender. All Toads are genderless or something among those lines.

It's only a logical conclusion. How can you tell that the Toad in the original Super Mario bros. is the same that returns in mario party games or future iterations? I will put it this way. Why aren't people pushing for a Goomba or Koopa? The are just as iconic as Toad "himself".

Captain Toad is more iconic than "The" Toad not because of importance, but because he IS a toad that you can objectively recognize. For all we know you don't love "THE" toad, but rather a collection of multiple characters that go by the same name.

In other words the love behind "The" Toad is the same as the love for "The" Link or rather the concept behind him.... Except Link has actual plot importance unlike a generic Toad that you recognize because "Oh, they look exactly like another toad in a different game".

There are many Toad but just one Captain Toad afterall.

By this logic, Toadbert is more iconic then The Toad.

I'm more then sure the Toad we know and love and play as has been confirmed to be his own character.
http://www.mariowiki.com/toad

All of that is for the singular character we know as Toad. And while some Toad's also have a blue coat and red spots, there's very few, and The Toad is the only one that frequently appears with those.

I'm probably missing some but:
-SMB2 (Doki doki panic reskin). Features Toad despite being a dream.
-New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Features Yellow/Blue spots Toads instead.
-Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker. Self explanatory?
The main features of a red spotted Toad are on spin offs and a Koopa Troopa has been playable in Mario Tennis games.
The point being... Red spot Toad's popularity certainly doesn't come from his role as a playable character. At least it's not the main contributing factor.

If Toadbert had battle potential then he would be the one getting support. Kranky Kong probably fits that role better.

And it's cool that Toad is confirmed to be his own character, but with absolute no distinctive traits from his peers I am not certain people noticed that other than believing that was Probably the case maybe?

Unfortunately, the treatment Toad is given in canon just makes him unnecessary in my opinion. If a Toad ever makes it into the actual Smash games, i believe it would be Captain Toad.... but I digress. If you like Toad then that's Cool. He is already on Crusade and I'm not arguing he should be removed or anything. I just believe that Captain Toad actually has a better pool set to pick from because of the game he stars in. Basically he can do everything Toad does... except jumping the same height Razz

Actually no, I'm pretty sure it was confirmed by Nintendo. I don't have the source but I distinctly recall it.

Never said Captain can't have a cool moveset. I feel Captain Toad should be alt for Toad if/when he gets into mainline Smash.

I don't really want to argue with this anymore, as it's all opinion-based.

Sure, let's agree to disagree then and focus on the thread's topic: Captain Toad.

I think a Down B akin to Peach's vegetables would make sense. A few moves would involve the pickaxe which could be swing around like an axe (Heavy slow moves) but have a sweetspot on the metal Vs sourspot everywhere else.

It's coming up with an Up B what's tough (and will most likely end up sakurai'd) since he is supposed to have less jump prowess than the original Toad (which is already known for not having the best jump anyway).

tbh, I don't like the idea of any Toad being in Smash, cuz they aren't really significant, but at least Cpt. Toad has something that separates him any other character that's been playable in a Mario game. Toad doesn't. Like, look at Toad's specials.

-Up-B: Mario powerup that's not unique to Toad in any way.
-Side-B: Mario KART powerup that's not unique to Toad in any way (Aside from the golden mushroom being his special item in MKDD, but it had been in the series before and after that anyways)
-Down-B: From Mario 2, not unique to Toad. Plus, Peach already has turnips
-Neutral B: Has Toad ever done this in a Mario game? The only time I can recall seeing Toad use his Head is in Peach's Neutral B, and even then that was spores, not some random hot air lol.

As for the rest of his moves, he just kinda has a bunch of punches, kicks and headbutts. Nothing Toad does in the Mario games or in Crusade really justifies him being in Smash. So I'm not really a fan of Toad being in the game (I mean, we shouldn't CUT him, he's still a complete character whose kinda fun to play as, but I just don't think he should've been added in the first place).

But CAPTAIN Toad on the other hand has a unique game series and playstyle that could definitely justify him being a playable character. He of course has the jumping gimmick, but even then still has the pickaxe and backpack that could make for a cool moveset. But I don't think there should be two Toads in the game, and I'd assume most people think the same too considering that not that many ppl even wanted the original Toad in. I DEFINITELY don't think he should be a clone, that's just a waste of time and a character slot. Not that I hate clones, but there are so many better options for clone characters and for Mario characters.

That's a rather lengthy way to say "No". lol, but your reasoning is solid.

Me, I don't really focus on whether or not people would like/want it, but rather what can be done with the character. And if there's a chance that it works I might as well give it the push.

Who knows... all my ideas might get shot down, but at least the attempt was made.

Back to captain Toad though, A down tilt could also involve villager's "Grass pulling". it might also make sense for some headbutts and maybe even taking the bag off to swing it around. Toad is the fastest one when pulling vegetables out of the ground in SMB2 so it's not farfetch'ed that he has the arm strength to swing the backpack for moves different that that of normal Toad's.
Now if only he hadn't skip leg day and be able to jump.... lol

The Neutral B has Toad releasing spores as far as I know, referencing Peach's neutral B. Though according to Wikipedia, Toad has used spores to summon mushrooms and use them as shields in Mario Sports Mix. Keep in mind that Toad is another one of those cases of "sprites were ready, let's add him" the old dev team had, though personally I've never really had an issue with Toad's moveset. His specials are fine in my opinion, and a TON of characters use generic punches, kicks, headbutts etc. for their normals if they don't really have any other options. But those are just opinions.

There is a surprising lack of the pickaxe however.

I'd love to be able to play as an alt for Toad. His moveset is tons of fun in Crusade already, and since the character itself is literally Toad, there's really no loss in making him the Ken to Toad's Ryu, so to speak. So, support.

A ground spring can be his jump with the same surprised fallback reaction as in the game itself.

A very high jump, but he can't jump in mid-air.

Since he's got so much heavy stuff he can be a fast faller as well as being harder to knock away. So he's best as a heavy hitting ground fighter with that single jump as an escape clutch.

Otherwise, support.

That's because Captain Toad is a Toad with a name (the name being, well, "Captain Toad").
As in, it's the first Toad to differentiate himself from every other Toad with something that is not simply a different hat.
And no, Toadette does not count, because according to Nintendo, Toadette is actually a seperate species.
...oh wow, I let out my inner nerd again, did I?

Psst, Toadsworth
