PostSubject: Competitive Pokemon Question   Fri Oct 17, 2014 2:38 pm

So I am getting into competitive pokemon and am trying to forge a team. I'm centering it around a Scolipede baton pass lead and a physical sweep Mega Charizard X, but I have no idea where to go from there. Here is the two guys so far:

Scolipede @ Focus Sash
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Spikes
- Swords Dance
- Megahorn
- Baton Pass

Charizard-Mega-X @ Charizardite X
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Outrage
- Earthquake
- Roost

Any tips related to other pokemon to join the team?

If you want any Baton Pass user at all, you're gonna have to set it up well. Here are a few problems you might run across that you have to address:
- Scolipede has no defenses whatsoever, and no reliable immunities. The only way you'll be able to switch in is on a revenge kill, so you have to know exactly which Pokemon you can switch him in on.
- You need a spinner, if you're using Focus Sash.
- Without Substitute, you're giving the opponent a free turn when you baton pass to your Charizard. If they predict you properly, you're likely to get hit by a status move, which will render your Charizard useless. Consider Light Clay Safeguard if that's still viable, or see if you can work Substitute into your Scolipede (you probably can't on a sash user).

At the end of the day, Baton Pass is a very tricky thing to use. If you're new to the scene I recommend starting somewhere less difficult, such as a bulky offensive team (i.e. a team of hard-hitters who cancel out each other's weaknesses).

I'd personally worry about Stealth Rock with that. Both Charizard and Delibird have x4 Rock weakness and Scolipede has x2 weakness. A good Stealth Rock user or anybody with a good Rock type will just wreck things.

Well, Charizard X is only 2x. But yeah, Relic definitely needs a spinner.

True but you can't Mega Evolve until Stealth Rock takes effect.

Oh, really? I still don't understand those damn items, lol.

Anyway Relic I just realised you said your Scolipede was a lead. I don't know what the lead game is in gen 6, but I doubt Baton Passers would be effective. Stealth Rock will be dangerous as Ganon said, but also Taunt leads will stop you dead, sandstorm and hail leads will OHKO your Scolipede, U-Turn leads will go into some type of hazer or status spreader the moment you use Swords Dance. Even the most limited Baton Passing takes two turns, so against a decent opponent you have to force them into a situation where you have those two turns free.

And also, set-up sweepers like your Baton Pass'd Charizard can only ever be active in the late game. This is especially true of your Charizard, since it knows Outrage. What all set-up sweepers have in common is that you absolutely must keep them hidden in the early game, so that you can draw out and kill their counters. If you try to sweep with your Charizard at the beginning, you'll just quickly lose your most important Pokemon.

If you're not dead set on a Baton Pass core, I recommend starting off with a bulky offensive team, which can involve your Charizard. So you have a Charizard, and then you also have other hard-hitters who counter water types, fairy types, etc.

I'm not sure about your Scolipede lead, I would think that you would want to have it more defensively based so it can survive some hits while setting up... that's just me, though.

OK, thanks for all the advice.

So, I have a team now, but I still have Scolipede, and it's not bulky offensive, so I'll see what else is said and make further changes.

Honestly I was trying to aim for Hyper Offensive.  If you want to see the current team, then I'll update the OP, but for now, I'm just gonna try taking your advice.

EDIT: I decided to just make a whole new team for Bulky Offensive using a nifty guide I found on the internet. So here it is:

Hack & Slash (Scizor) @ Scizorite
Ability: Light Metal
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Bullet Punch
- Knock Off
- Superpower

The Catalyst (Magnezone) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 172 HP / 252 SpA / 84 Spe
Modest Nature
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Grass]
- Flash Cannon
- Thunderbolt

Rampage (Gyarados) @ Life Orb
Ability: Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Aqua Tail
- Bounce
- Stone Edge

Ashes to Dust (Landorus-Therian) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 252 Atk / 24 Def / 232 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Earthquake
- U-turn
- Explosion
- Stone Edge

Punisher (Garchomp) @ Lum Berry
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpA / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Earthquake
- Dragon Claw
- Swords Dance

Smolderer (Heatran) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Overheat
- Flash Cannon
- Earth Power
- Stone Edge

Any thoughts?
