This is where we talk all things Project M, the popular mod which aims to modify Brawl into a full-fledged successor to Melee.

Here's a list of features:
-Melee reminiscent physics, speed and techniques
-No Tripping
-A competitively balanced roster, with every character essentially standing a competitive chance against each other.
-Mod support, which allows you to add any custom music, textures, stages, menus, and SFX.
-Stock Control (Individual Lives for players)
-Crew Mode (Which automatically starts the next match with the remaining amount of stocks the winning player had)
-The return of several past stage from Melee and 64 (Fourside, Dreamland, Fountain of Dreams, and a few others),
-Stages redesigned or edited for competitive play (Norfair, Rumble Falls, Green Hill, Wario Ware, etc.)
-Brand new stages made specifically for P:M (Training Room, Dracula's Castle and Infinite Glacier)
-Lots of new alternate colors and skins for almost every Brawl character (OoT skins for Link, Zelda, Shiek and Ganon, Dr. Mario, Mr. L, Melee Fox and Falco, etc.)
-Turbo Mode in 3.0
-Roy and Mewtwo
-All Star Versus, in which you can play as a different character on every different stock.
-Vastly improved stamina settings, which include stock support and up to 990HP
-And some other cool shit

NOTE: Currently, the mod is only optimized for NTSC Wiis, but Japanese Wiis can play without modding, and modded Wiis from non Japanese/American regions can play it. Also, a version for PAL users is planned. And finally, as of 3.0, Riivolution is no longer supported.

Outside of balancing, I think Kirby should be the easiest considering the only animation changed from Melee to Brawl was his dash attack.

The next characters are almost undoubtedly going to be Meta Knight and Olimar. Also, you may want to add to the OP that Turbo mode is coming soon.

The problem is that they have to balance his copy abilities, and possibly change animations for each one. That's around 40 or so moves that need balancing, not including the rest of his moveset. Kirby will take much longer than the others to code.

Ice Climbers are a similar situation, they are taking their time coding them to make sure they come out right. Samus (power suit) is being delayed by problems coding her Super Missiles to work like they do in Melee. Everyone else is being worked on at their discretion.

When you have your booth next to them at APEX you get to ask a lot of questions.

And Olimar has Pikmin, so actually Samus and Yoshi will almost definitely come first. Icies, Olimar and Kirby are undoubtedly the tougher 3 to work on. Yoshi I suspect has been delayed this long to come up with a good metagame, since Yoshi has always been bad. Meta Knight is probably taking this long because they ne3ed to find just the right level of nerfing to balance him into this engine without pissing off his mains by altering his meta game. And Samus is tough because super missiles. Still think MK, Samus and Yoshi are the next 3 characters.

Looks to be still OP to me, but we'll have to see about that. After all they did manage to turn one of the worst characters in smash history and make him OP (looking at you, Bowser).

Looks like MK is more based on comboing at the cost of his camping. The opposite direction to how we've gone for 0.9 lol.

I like what they did with Meta Knight, my only complaints are that he doesn't juggle as well as they made him out to be able to, and he is a semi-fast faller and has trouble escaping combos. Also, on most maps you can't fall off stage with an aerial and make it back, like using an aerial with Fox/Falco they have to be rising aerials which can be kind of difficult to space with a character whose range is kinda short like Meta Knight.

I'm sorry for being a Spelling nazi, but don't you mean NTSC? Also JAP Wiis can play without modding.

I really hope that they'll make it available to the public, it's kind of unfair that they're keeping it to themselves. At the same time I guess it's fair because they did work their asses off...

Edit: Actually they released a beta of the clone engine just today.
