PostSubject: Super Mario Bros. REBOOT and SSBC OPEN-SOURCE (Will Update)   Wed Nov 16, 2011 6:09 pm

Sorry I haven't been on in awhile. I've been having password issues...

For starters, I'd like to say that my current fan-game, Super Mario REBOOT, is going smoothly. If you remember the older screenshots, those are much different than what is in the game now. Mario's sprites have been reworked into a 16-bit goodness superior to those in Super Mario All-Stars. There are currently 7 Levels and 1 Fortress, which means I have only 2 levels and 1 Fortress to make before this Demo hopefully hits Mario Fan-Games Galaxy.

Now, on the subject of Super Smash Bros. Crusade. SSBC is like a teenage girl- it has many confusing problems that it shouldn't have.

Right now, I am not spriting for Project: Crusade. However, I am still trying to get the SSBC Engine up for grabs. I will be seeing Falcon8r this coming week (Phantom7 will be gone- he's working on an Ocarina of Time Music Project btw) and hopefully, we may be able to release the Open-Source version. When this does happen, it should make its debut on
The SSBC OPEN-SOURCE Forums and other places as well, such as The Game Maker Community. When SSBC does become Open-Source, there is a possibility that I may sprite some characters for fun.

Now for the part you've all been waiting for: What Phantom has been saying recently. I've updated him from time to time on Project: Crusade's roster (the only two characters I'm somewhat against are Prinny and Ashley) and he doesn't care about who you choose, though. He often says something on the lines of this:

"If Crusade's going Open-Source, anyone can make any character they want, so what's the point of this?"

Comments?

See, I was talking to a few of my friends about this the other day.

I explained to them how I ended up (mostly) in control of this game. I said something like this:
"So one of the dev team members - the spriter Dr. Mario X - suddenly came on the forum one day and stated that the dev team had gotten bored after three years and was just going to release the .gmk and make it open source. Pretty much the whole forum said 'THAT'S A TERRIBLE IDEA WHAT ARE YOU THINKING', and I suggested that I could take over development because I would've worked on a DLC addition later on so I was already going to be working with the game. DMX said that wasn't a bad idea but he still wanted an open-source, so he gave me a .gmk to work with (which ended up being an older and buggier version) and I messed around with it for a while. I looked around the code for a couple hours, and said to myself 'DMX. YOU THOUGHT THIS WAS USER-FRIENDLY?' I looked around a bit more over the next couple weeks and once again said 'DMX. YOU THOUGHT THIS WAS USER-FRIENDLY?' Then I finally got the original coder, Falcon8r, to help me with some stuff. He explained it to me and I suddenly understood quite a few things, but then - again - said to myself: 'HE THOUGHT THIS WAS USER FRIENDLY. WHAT IS THIS I DON'T EVEN.'"

See, the main issue is the CSS. Nobody would've guessed it was loaded through a couple of out-of-game files and an in-game script. Jaklub couldn't figure out what to do with the script until I told him what Falcon told me. Felipe couldn't even find the script that controlled the CSS. If two people with pretty good knowledge of GML couldn't find out how to edit the CSS, no normal user would be able to. Had I released an open-source version it would have failed completely.
However, now that I know what to do I can make an open-source version, and still plan to. Although Falcon making it would probably be a much better idea since he knows which things to change to make it actually be user-friendly. Because at the moment, the game isn't user-friendly in the least. It took me an hour straight to figure out how hitboxes worked.

In any case, good luck with the Mario game and all that. Also I need you, SERIOUSLY NEED YOU to ban Kooparaider from that forum. SERIOUSLY HE IS A TOTAL JERK AND WILL BEG TO BE A MODERATOR AND IF YOU DON'T MAKE HIM ONE HE'LL SPAM THE FORUM FOR HOURS THEN MOVE ON TO WIKIS AND OTHER CRAP. BAN HIM NOW.
