PostSubject: Thoughts on Call of Duty as a whole   Fri Mar 01, 2013 8:25 pm

I feel that Call of Duty is a bit stale now because to me it feels that Activision doesn't do much to innovate and improve the games as a whole. All they do is add new maps and do little to nothing to add fresh modes and gameplay features. The killstreak rewards are ridiculous as they either take too many kills to get a somewhat weaker reward or get too little kills and get a stronger reward.

I also hate the whole knifing kills, because getting hit anywhere on the body is a one hit kill, whereas a headshot with a smg or pistol doesn't? Throwing knives are even more ridiculous because they can hit after a bounce and still kill in one hit. Same with snipers, if you get hit in the ARM or LEG, how does that insta kill you? I don't get how an FPS could be so broken, yet it is so popular?

Please don't hate on this thread; this is just an honest opinion of the series

Rather, that's modern COD. The series hasn't been good since 3, or arguably the first Modern Warfare (though that one also started the downhill trends).

COD 4 was fine, after that is hell. At least in Halo it takes more than a quarter of a second to kill someone, putting aside the fact that there's much more starategy to be considered than COD as a whole. Not that this should become a COD vs Halo discussion, seeing as how the comparison would be moot.

I agree with you there, as I am a huge halo fan, as well as a BF3 player and they require coordination with your team

Not even considering a team scenario, the overall metagame of Halo is far more sophisticated than COD. This is not biased either; I've played both series for quite a loge time, and while Halo's metagame becomes more complex and varied with each game, COD's are all pretty much identical starting from MW2. I don't feel this is the right place to discuss the differences any further, but if you really want to know how I feel about it then we can take it to a new thread or pm's.

COD 4 is pretty different from MW2+, enough to warrant being grouped with the older games imo.

COD 4 is not different from the following games, nor is it like the older games. In fact that's exactly the problem with MW2, it was simply MW1 with a few new guns and perks.

Call of Duty 4 was a great game for its time, but Activision then decided to run the series far beneath the ground to the point where it's nothing but a rotting corpse. Unless some major innovations come soon, it shall go the way of Guitar Hero. Oh, won't that be grand?

From what little i've played of the franchise i've never seen what was really so special about it. It's not bad, but it's not great either. It's just so bland and unmemorable (To me). To be fair i haven't played much of the franchise (just two games on PS2 and a Free weekend of Black Ops 2 multiplayer on Steam), and i did have some fun with the multiplayer.

That's how the game sucks you in; the multiplayer seems fun at first until you start getting killed when you have unloaded more bullets into your opponents, but they just turn around and one shot you. I kid you not, that happened to me the last time I played MW3 when I was playing drop zone and that is what happens every single time to me. Multiplayer isn't fun when everyone uses snipers on the other team because they know how broken that particular weapon is up close.

Guitar Hero died because Activision was stupid enough to release too many games in one year, but what you have said is exactly what I am telling other people, but they don't care. They still think that CoD is the best game ever because they can get away with cheating and hacking other people for their advantage. The lag compensation sucks as well.

I have no hate for the series, I know it's a good series, and the games are pretty decent.

What I can't stand is the fanbase, I have always avoided the series because while singleplayer is pretty cool, multiplayer has such awful players, either screaming through the mics, being stupidly cocky or knowing every single corner of every single map because they don't realise any other game exists. I also don't own them because when ever the subject of games is brought up, people always try to shift it to either CoD or Fifa, and it makes the conversation a lot easier to divert if you don't own the games.

I don't really like any first person shooter game (Halo I can tolerate because of forge). I'd say it's the fact that most FPS games are the same in most ways while most likely the deciding factor is that I'm terrible at them. When I play games, I like a good knowing of my surroundings and what's coming. FPS games don't have that which puts me at a huge disadvantage, plus I don't dedicate my time to them like everyone else does when they play these games.

FPS games can be unique, they just have to try, take Borderlands and Crysis for example, both are FPS games, but they have so much more to them than just shooting that they feel very much unique.

Portal isn't a shooter, and Half-Life, TF2 and L4D are great games, but I was looking for examples on "Uniqueness". I mean I could say Ricochet....

...Portal is a first person shooter.
It's also pretty god damned unique, if you ask me.

As for Carl of Judy, the first 3 games (that are held up as 'classics' for some reason) are forgettable. World at War was alright, not the best game ever but I enjoyed it and multiplayer was actually decent. Modern Warfare and up are terrible.

tl;dr as a series it's p gay

Just because you fire a device it Portal doesn't make it a shooter, but whatever.

I always thought that Portal was more a FPP or First-Person Puzzler.

Being able to shoot something does not put the game into the genre of "shooting games" or "first-person shooter". It is a puzzle game, nothing else.

PORTAL IS A FIRST PERSON GAME.
YOU SHOOT.
A GUN.
IN THE BLOODY GAME.

YOU DO NOT KILL PEOPLE WITH SAID GUN, IT IS NOT LETHAL, BUT IT'S STILL A GUN. YOU SHOOT IT IN FIRST PERSON PERSPECTIVE.
IT'S A FIRST PERSON SHOOTER.
YES, IT'S A PUZZLE GAME.
BUT IT'S ALSO A SHOOTER.
A FIRST PERSON SHOOTER.

ARE WE DONE HERE.

you can kill turrets indirectly by shooting a portal in the ceiling and then one right below them so they fall through and crash on the ground

so you can sorta kill people with it
