As much as I don't like hacking, I agree with you. No question, Sableye any day.

The only games I ever hacked were Pokemon games to start as not-starter-Pokemon.

If you have free choice like that, in a way it's more fun.

In the last PMD I hacked to start as a Porygon2 with my Partner being a Makuhita
no Groudon Rayquaza shenanigans or anything, all legit

How does it affect the portrait boxes? I figured they'd only given story reactions to starters.

the reaction boxes just don't appear because they aren't set for that Pokemon.
also special sprites don't work and it puts the hacked-in Pokemon into its walking state instead.

but, everything else plays out as normal. nothing breaks and its all perfectly fine.

a fun side-effect though is that the hacked-in Pokemon starts with the originals starting moves.

my brother replaced Munchlax with Pinser and the thing had Metronome. many funny situations occurred in the later times

That's probably among the tackiest titles I have ever seen for a video game
